Sri Lankan cricket great Kumar Sangakkara has accused Ryanair staff of mistreating him and his family at Dublin Airport in Ireland, describing the encounter as a deeply distressing experience. The former Sri Lankan captain alleged that airline employees spoke to his family in an unacceptable manner and threatened them, prompting him to voice his frustration publicly on social media.
The 48-year-old former cricketer shared his account in a post on X, asking whether other passengers had experienced similar treatment from Ryanair staff in Dublin. He said he was shocked by the way the employees had spoken to him and his family, describing their alleged behaviour as appalling.
Sangakkara also stressed that no passenger deserved to be treated in such a manner. He described the incident as his first unpleasant experience in Dublin, indicating that the encounter had left him deeply disappointed.
However, the former wicketkeeper-batter did not provide details about what led to the alleged confrontation. It remains unclear whether the incident occurred during check-in, boarding or another stage of the airport process. Sangakkara did not explain what may have triggered the exchange or provide a detailed account of the alleged threats.
Neither Dublin Airport authorities nor Ryanair had publicly responded to the allegations at the time of the report. Without statements from the airline or further information about the circumstances, the precise details of the incident remain unverified.
Ryanair is an Irish low-cost airline operating routes across Europe and other destinations. Its airport operations involve passenger check-in, boarding, baggage handling and compliance with travel requirements. However, no information has emerged to establish which, if any, of these procedures were connected to Sangakkara’s complaint.
The allegations have attracted attention partly because of Sangakkara’s prominence in international cricket. Widely regarded as one of Sri Lanka’s finest players, he enjoyed an illustrious career across all three international formats and earned recognition for his batting consistency, technical ability and leadership.
A distinguished career in international cricket
Sangakkara represented Sri Lanka in 134 Test matches, 404 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 56 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). His performances with the bat placed him among the most prolific run-scorers in the history of Sri Lankan cricket.
In Test cricket, he scored 12,400 runs, including 38 centuries and 52 half-centuries. His ODI record includes 14,234 runs, with 25 centuries and 93 half-centuries. Alongside his batting achievements, he served as a wicketkeeper and became an influential figure in the national side.
Sangakkara also played an important part in Sri Lanka’s campaigns at two successive ODI World Cups. He was a member of the teams that reached the finals in 2007 and 2011, finishing as runners-up on both occasions. His performances during those years helped establish him as one of the defining cricketers of his generation.
His involvement in the sport continued after his international retirement. Sangakkara played in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and later moved into coaching and team management. He served as head coach of the Rajasthan Royals, bringing his international experience to the franchise.
Although Sangakkara is best known for his achievements on the cricket field, his complaint in Dublin has brought attention to his experience as a passenger. The allegations have raised questions about the treatment of travellers by airline personnel, but the available information does not establish what happened beyond the account he shared.
For now, Sangakkara’s social media post remains the principal public account of the incident. A response from Ryanair or Dublin Airport authorities could provide further clarity and help establish the circumstances surrounding his complaint.
