A fatal road accident on the Rangpur–Sayedpur highway left one person dead and at least 20 others injured when a passenger bus struck a central divider and overturned in Taraganj, Rangpur. The incident occurred on Thursday evening at approximately 6:45 pm in front of the BRAC office in the Ikorchali Market area.
The deceased has been identified as 27-year-old Enamul Haq, who was working as the bus assistant, locally known as a helper. He was a resident of the Paglapir area within Rangpur Sadar upazila. Police confirmed that he died at the scene from the severe impact of the crash. His body was subsequently moved to the Taraganj Balabari Highway Police Outpost for formal procedures.
According to police reports and eyewitnesses, the vehicle—operated by AR Travels—was travelling from Domar in Nilphamari district towards Rangpur city. As light drizzle slicked the highway, the bus reached the Ikorchali Market stretch, where the driver suddenly lost control. The speeding vehicle collided violently with the concrete road divider before flipping onto its side, trapping several passengers inside.
Abu Nur, a passenger onboard who was travelling from Domar to the Dhap neighbourhood in Rangpur, described the moments leading up to the crash. He noted that the driver noticeably accelerated after passing through Taraganj town. Upon entering the Ikorchali Market area amidst the rain, the vehicle swerved into the central island, causing immediate panic and widespread injuries among those on board.
Local residents were the first to respond, rushing to the scene to pull injured passengers from the wreckage. Fire Service personnel and highway police officers arrived shortly afterwards to lead the rescue operation and clear the road. The injured were initially transported to the Taraganj Upazila Health Complex for emergency treatment before being transferred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital due to the severity of their condition.
Following news of the crash, Taraganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Monabbor Hossain visited the site alongside local public representatives to assess the situation and coordinate assistance. Mostafizar Rahman, the Officer-in-Charge of Taraganj Highway Police Station, confirmed that emergency services responded swiftly and that the body of the deceased remains under police custody while inquiries continue.
