Irish Leg-Spinner Ben White Retires From International Cricket Aged 28

Irish leg-spinner Ben White has unexpectedly announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 28, stepping away from the global stage whilst at the peak of his career. The wrist-spinner concludes his international journey having taken 41 wickets across all three formats for Ireland. His sudden departure leaves a notable void in the national team's spin department, drawing the curtain on a career that saw him represent his nation at the highest level.
White first caught the attention of national selectors during the Ireland Wolves tour of Bangladesh in 2021, where his bowling composure and wicket-taking ability stood out. That breakthrough tour earned him his senior international debut later that year. In a fitting turn of events, his final international appearance also came against Bangladesh in December last year, bringing a sense of symmetry to his international career.
Although White featured across Test, One-Day International, and Twenty20 International formats, he was undeniably most potent in short-form cricket. In T20 Internationals, he proved to be a consistent threat, averaging a wicket every 20 deliveries. His finest performance in Irish colours came in 2024 against Afghanistan, where he delivered a masterclass in leg-spin bowling, taking four wickets for just 20 runs. His reliability in the shortest format earned him places in three separate ICC T20 World Cup campaigns—in 2021, 2024, and 2026.
Beyond his international duties, White established himself as a dominant force in Irish domestic cricket, representing clubs and provincial teams such as Leinster Lightning, Northern Knights, Munster Reds, Phoenix, and CSNI. He topped the bowling charts in the 2021 Interprovincial T20 Trophy with 17 dismissals, cementing his reputation as a primary strike bowler. He repeated his big-match heroism in the 2024 Irish Senior Cup final, turning in a match-winning performance of five for 34 to guide his team to victory.
Reflecting on his decision to hang up his boots, White expressed profound gratitude to Cricket Ireland for giving him the opportunity to fulfil a childhood ambition. He acknowledged that playing Test cricket and featuring in three world tournaments surpassed even his own expectations. White confirmed he would always look back on his achievements in the national jersey with immense pride and affection.
