De Jong Returns to Action as Flick Backs Midfield Comeback

Frenkie de Jong is determined to reclaim a regular place in Barcelona’s starting line-up after returning from a lengthy injury lay-off, with head coach Hansi Flick encouraged by the Dutch midfielder’s performances in training and his contribution on the pitch.

The 29-year-old made his competitive return in Sunday’s El Clásico against Real Madrid, coming on as a substitute for approximately 16 minutes. Although his involvement was brief, the appearance marked an important step in his recovery and gave him an opportunity to begin rebuilding his match fitness.

De Jong suffered a ligament injury to his right knee while representing the Netherlands at the World Cup. The setback kept him out of action for an extended period, forcing him to undergo rehabilitation before gradually returning to full fitness.

His comeback against Real Madrid was a significant moment for both the player and Barcelona. After spending so long on the sidelines, De Jong must now regain his rhythm and demonstrate that he can compete consistently at the highest level. Flick’s decision to introduce him, even for a short spell, provided a first opportunity to assess his readiness in a competitive setting.

During the match, Flick deployed De Jong in a more advanced midfield role rather than his familiar defensive midfield position. The tactical adjustment offered a glimpse of how the Dutchman might be used as he works his way back into the side. His ability to retain possession, move the ball through midfield and connect defensive play with attacking movements could give Barcelona additional flexibility.

Flick was pleased with the midfielder’s progress, particularly his work in training and his ability to strengthen the team when in possession.

“He has done very well in training and gives us a lot of strength on the ball. It was very important for us to have him back on the pitch, even if only for a few minutes,” the Barcelona manager said.

The praise will provide encouragement for De Jong as he attempts to re-establish himself in a competitive midfield unit. However, returning from injury does not automatically guarantee a starting place. Barcelona have several options in midfield, including Pedri, Gavi and Marc Bernal, while the original report also names Rodri among the players competing for midfield opportunities.

Competition for places means De Jong will need to demonstrate his quality consistently. His technical ability and composure in possession have made him an important midfield option, but he must also show that he can maintain his fitness and perform effectively over longer periods.

There may be an opportunity for him in a more attacking role. Dani Olmo’s injury has affected Barcelona’s options in that area, with Fermín López currently featuring in the position. De Jong’s versatility could give Flick another option when deciding how to organise the midfield, although his eventual role will depend on the manager’s tactical plans and the availability of other players.

De Jong has made it clear that he does not want to spend an extended period on the bench. Speaking to Dutch television channel Ziggo Sport, he expressed his determination to return to regular first-team football.

“I have never spent a long time on the bench, and I do not want that to happen this season either. I am now fully fit and getting fitter every day. I hope to get more playing time,” he said.

The midfielder also acknowledged that his recovery must be managed carefully. After a lengthy absence, rebuilding match sharpness and gradually increasing playing time are essential parts of the process. Even when a player feels physically ready, regaining the rhythm and intensity of competitive football can take time.

Explaining his approach, De Jong added: “I understand that I have to return gradually. However, the long-term goal is to play regularly and regain my place in the starting line-up as quickly as possible.”

For Barcelona, De Jong’s return provides another option in a department where ball retention, movement and control are central to the team’s approach. His passing range and ability to progress the ball under pressure could prove valuable as the season develops.

Flick’s positive assessment suggests that the midfielder remains in his plans. Nevertheless, a brief appearance in El Clásico and encouraging performances in training will not, by themselves, secure a regular starting role.

De Jong’s immediate priority is to maintain his fitness, build up his playing time and make the most of every opportunity. If he can deliver consistent performances while avoiding further setbacks, he will strengthen his case for a permanent return to Barcelona’s starting XI.
