A 35-year-old man is fighting for his life after being repeatedly stabbed and thrown from the roof of a moving intercity train near Sreepur Railway Station in Gazipur on Thursday night. The violent attack unfolded aboard the Dhaka-bound Teesta Express as it approached the station, leaving the passenger severely wounded on the embankment beside the railway tracks.
The victim has been identified as Md. Anwarul Islam, son of Md. Riton Miah, from Dattapara village in Ishwarganj upazila under Mymensingh district. He sustained multiple deep knife wounds, including severe lacerations to his abdomen, resulting in massive blood loss before local residents managed to reach him.
Describing the rescue, a local youth named Mahiya explained that he was walking home along the railway line with a group of friends when desperate cries for help broke the nighttime silence. Following the screams of “Save me, save me,” the group rushed towards the source of the noise. Upon arrival, they discovered Anwarul collapsed on the ground, bleeding profusely from his stomach and other parts of his body. Realising the urgency of the situation, the group picked up the injured man and rushed him directly to Sreepur Upazila Health Complex.
Emergency medical staff at the health complex worked quickly to administer primary treatment and staunch the bleeding. However, due to the critical nature of his injuries and deteriorating vital signs, doctors determined that he required immediate surgical intervention. Dr Anik, an emergency physician at Sreepur Upazila Health Complex, confirmed that after providing essential first aid, medical staff referred the patient to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur city for advanced treatment.
Efforts to obtain an official statement from Sreepur Railway Station Master Shamima Akhtar were unsuccessful, as she failed to respond to repeated telephone calls on Thursday night. Meanwhile, law enforcement officers have launched an inquiry into the assault. Md. Shahinur Alam, Officer-in-Charge of Sreepur Police Station, confirmed that a police unit was dispatched to the hospital shortly after receiving report of the incident. Officers are working to record the victim’s statement and identify the armed assailants involved in the crime.
