Under MLS regulations, a player who accumulates five yellow cards during the regular season is normally suspended for the next match and fined $250. Messi appeared to have reached that threshold during Inter Miami’s 2-2 draw against Cincinnati last Wednesday, when he was booked in the 44th minute.
However, the five-card total does not automatically determine his eligibility for the next fixture. MLS has a ‘Good Behaviour Incentive’ provision that allows players to reduce their accumulated disciplinary tally by completing a series of matches without receiving further bookings.
According to the league’s regulations, a player who completes five consecutive matches without receiving a yellow card, a red card or any additional disciplinary punishment has one yellow card deducted from the total used to determine suspension eligibility. This incentive can be applied up to three times during the regular season.
Messi had already completed more than five consecutive matches without a booking before receiving his latest yellow card. Consequently, one of his previous cautions had been removed from the suspension calculation. Although that booking remains part of his overall disciplinary record, it no longer counts towards the threshold that triggers an automatic suspension.
The 38-year-old has benefited from the provision on three separate occasions this season. As a result, despite having received five yellow cards in total, his adjusted disciplinary tally currently stands at just two.
Messi’s disciplinary record has changed several times throughout the campaign. At the beginning of the season, he completed more than five matches without receiving a caution. However, MLS rules do not allow the adjusted tally to fall below zero.
He subsequently received two yellow cards in separate matches. A run of five consecutive appearances without another booking reduced his effective total to one. Another caution then took the figure back to two.
The Argentine went on to play 10 consecutive matches without receiving a yellow card, allowing his adjusted tally to return to zero through the incentive system. However, two bookings in his last three appearances have taken the figure back up to two.
This explains why Messi can feature against New England despite accumulating five yellow cards over the course of the season. His overall disciplinary record and the adjusted tally used to determine suspension are treated differently under the league’s regulations.
Inter Miami face a significant test in continental qualification race
Messi’s availability is a welcome boost for Inter Miami, who are preparing for a crucial encounter against New England Revolution as they pursue a place in next season’s CONCACAF Champions Cup.
Inter Miami head coach Cristian Gonzalez has made it clear that his side cannot afford to drop unnecessary points during the closing stages of the regular season. With qualification places still at stake, every remaining fixture carries considerable importance.
Miami currently occupy third place in the MLS Eastern Conference standings, with 56 points from 32 matches. New England Revolution are second with 58 points from the same number of games, while Nashville lead the table with 71 points.
Both Inter Miami and New England have already secured qualification for the 2026 MLS play-offs. However, their ambitions extend beyond the domestic competition, with both sides also looking to secure places in the next edition of the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
The tournament is one of the region’s leading club competitions, bringing together qualifying teams from North America, Central America and the Caribbean. MLS clubs can earn places through several domestic competitions and league achievements.
These include the MLS Cup, Leagues Cup, US Open Cup and MLS Supporters’ Shield. Qualification places are also available through the Eastern and Western Conference standings.
Nashville have already won the Supporters’ Shield, creating an additional opportunity for the next eligible team from the Eastern Conference to qualify directly for the continental competition. This has made the battle for the remaining positions particularly significant.
With just two points separating Inter Miami and New England, their upcoming meeting could have a considerable influence on the final standings. A victory would allow Miami to close the gap on their immediate rivals and strengthen their chances of securing continental qualification.
New England, meanwhile, will be equally determined to protect their position near the top of the conference.
For Inter Miami, having Messi available is particularly important at this stage of the campaign. His attacking influence and leadership make him a central figure in the team’s ambitions, especially in matches against direct competitors.
Having avoided suspension through MLS’s good-behaviour provision, the Argentine captain can now focus on helping his side secure a valuable result. With the regular season approaching its conclusion, Miami will be hoping their influential forward can make the difference in a fixture that could shape their continental prospects.
