Three Fraudulent Voters Detained During Thakurgaon By-Election

Security forces detained three young men attempting to cast fraudulent votes during the parliamentary by-election for the Thakurgaon-1 constituency on Thursday. The detentions took place in the afternoon at the Danarhat Ansaria Fazil Madrasa polling centre in Thakurgaon Sadar upazila, where watchful election officials caught the individuals attempting to impersonate registered voters.
The detained individuals were identified as Himel, Siam, and Minhaj, all students at a local madrasa. Himel is currently studying in his second year of the Alim programme, whilst Siam and Minhaj are enrolled in their first year. Presiding Officer Muhammad Abu Sayem confirmed the arrests, explaining that polling agents and centre staff spotted inconsistencies when verifying voter identities. Following their detection, an executive magistrate arrived at the scene to conduct preliminary questioning. The three youths were subsequently secured in an administrative room inside the centre as law enforcement authorities prepared formal legal charges.
Voting across the Thakurgaon-1 constituency—comprising the Sadar, Ruhia, and Bhulli regions—began at 8:00 am in an orderly and spirited atmosphere. Enthusiastic voters formed disciplined queues outside various polling stations from early morning. To guarantee a peaceful polling process and deter potential malpractices, authorities deployed augmented contingents of police, Ansar, and paramilitary forces across all polling centres in the constituency.
Five candidates are competing for the parliamentary seat in this election. The slate includes Mirza Faysal Amin of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), running under the Sheaf of Paddy symbol, and Delawar Hossain of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, contesting under the Scale symbol. Also on the ballot are Khademul Islam of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (Hand Fan), Abdul Alim Nizami of Khelafat Andolan (Banyan Tree), and Hossain Mohammad Omar Farooq of Bangladesh Congress (Green Coconut).
The by-election was rendered necessary by notable national political shifts earlier in the year. During the 13th National Parliamentary Election held on 12 February, former BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir won the Thakurgaon-1 seat by a substantial margin. The seat subsequently fell vacant after Mirza Fakhrul was elected President of Bangladesh, requiring him to resign his parliamentary mandate in accordance with constitutional provisions. Barring the isolated detention of the three fake voters at Danarhat, voting proceeded smoothly under rigorous supervision.
