Dowry Dispute Ends in Tragedy as Young Wife Dies in Kurigram

A 20-year-old woman has allegedly been beaten to death by her husband and in-laws over an outstanding dowry payment of Tk 45,000 in Ulipur upazila of Kurigram. The incident took place on Wednesday night (28 October) in the Fakir Mohammad Namanir Char area. The victim’s husband and mother-in-law have reportedly gone into hiding following her death.

The deceased, identified as Nasrin Jahan, was the daughter of Nur Islam, a resident of Dolon village in Buraburi Union of Ulipur. She had been married to Alamgir Hossain, 25, son of Lalu Mia from the neighbouring Fakir Mohammad Namanir Char area, for nearly three years.

According to the victim’s family and local residents, Nasrin had allegedly faced repeated abuse from her husband over demands for dowry since their marriage. The family claims that the dispute over the outstanding payment had been a persistent source of tension in the household.

On Wednesday night, an argument reportedly broke out between Nasrin and her husband over various domestic matters. Her relatives allege that the disagreement escalated into a physical assault, during which she was beaten severely and died from her injuries.

Local residents learnt about the incident on Thursday morning and informed the police. Officers subsequently visited the scene, recovered Nasrin’s body and took it to the police station for further legal procedures.

Nasrin leaves behind a two-and-a-half-year-old son, adding to the tragedy surrounding her death. Her family has demanded justice and called for those responsible to be brought to account.

Speaking about the circumstances surrounding the marriage and the alleged abuse, Nasrin’s father, Nur Islam, said he had paid Tk 25,000 as dowry at the time of the wedding. The family had sought additional time to arrange the remaining amount, with plans to pay it after selling their paddy during the current harvest season.

However, he alleged that his son-in-law, Alamgir Hossain, and other members of the in-laws’ family continued to pressure and abuse his daughter over the outstanding Tk 45,000.

Nur Islam further claimed that his daughter had repeatedly suffered physical abuse because of the dowry demands. He accused the husband and his family members of beating her to death when the remaining money could not be paid, before fleeing the area.

Following the incident, Alamgir and his mother reportedly disappeared. Their whereabouts remain unknown, according to the information available.

Ulipur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shawkat Ali Sarkar confirmed that police had recovered the body after receiving information about the incident. He said officers had noticed visible injury marks on Nasrin’s body.

The OC added that the body was scheduled to be sent to the morgue on Friday for a post-mortem examination. The medical report would help establish the actual cause of death.

The allegations of dowry-related violence are also expected to be examined as part of the investigation. The findings of the post-mortem examination and other evidence will be important in determining the circumstances surrounding Nasrin’s death and establishing responsibility.

Dowry-related violence remains a serious concern in Bangladesh, where demands for money and property from a bride’s family can expose women to prolonged physical and psychological abuse. The Dowry Prohibition Act 2018 makes demanding, giving or receiving dowry a punishable offence. Where violence results in death, those responsible may also face prosecution under relevant criminal laws.

Nasrin’s death has left her young child without his mother and placed her family at the centre of a painful search for justice. The investigation will need to establish whether the alleged dowry dispute and assault led to her death and whether others were involved.
