A horrific incident unfolded in the capital’s upmarket residential area of Dhanmondi on Saturday morning, where a 68-year-old woman was stabbed to death inside her own residence. The deceased has been identified as Afia Akhtar.
Law enforcement officials acted swiftly following the incident and detained the victim’s 30-year-old son, Tahsin Arif, in connection with the fatal attack.
According to Sub-Inspector (SI) Mohammad Tauhidur Rahman of Dhanmondi Police Station, the brutal assault occurred between 5:30 am and 6:00 am inside a flat located on Road 9/A in Dhanmondi. Initial enquiries conducted by the police, alongside statements gathered from the household’s domestic worker and neighbours, suggest that Tahsin Arif attacked his mother repeatedly with a sharp knife. The severe wounds sustained during the frenzy resulted in profuse bleeding from her face and throat, causing her death on the spot.
Upon receiving information regarding the crime, a police team arrived at the residence to secure the scene, collect forensic evidence, and take the suspect into custody. The body of the deceased was subsequently recovered and transferred to the mortuary at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for a comprehensive post-mortem examination to establish the precise cause of death.
While the primary suspect remains in custody for interrogation, investigators are currently looking into the underlying motives that led to such a violent domestic encounter. Officers are scrutinising the suspect’s psychological state, personal history, and recent family interactions to ascertain what triggered the incident.
Domestic homicides and violent incidents involving family members in urban residential areas have increasingly raised concerns among law enforcement authorities and local communities alike. Police officials confirmed that legal proceedings are currently underway, and a formal case regarding the murder is expected to be registered shorty by the victim’s family members or law enforcement representatives. Further details are anticipated once the preliminary investigation and post-mortem analyses are completed.
