A £10,000-Crore Banking Shock for a £100-a-Month Worker

A 22-year-old man earning just 10,000 rupees a month in India’s Rajasthan was left stunned after discovering that his bank account had become the subject of a withdrawal restriction involving more than 10,000 crore rupees. The extraordinary figure, however, brought him no financial benefit. Instead, a technical glitch temporarily blocked access to his own savings of 55,000 rupees.

The incident took place in Sikar, Rajasthan, where the young man, identified as Samir Khan, works at an establishment called Nirmal Medical Point near the Salasar bus stand. He reportedly discovered the problem last Wednesday (28 October) while checking his bank balance on his mobile phone before recharging his prepaid telephone connection.

After entering his PIN into the banking application, Samir initially found that his account balance was showing as zero. Concerned by the unexpected information, he examined the account details more closely and discovered that a withdrawal restriction had been imposed on an amount exceeding 10,000 crore rupees.

The situation was particularly troubling because Samir had approximately 55,000 rupees in personal savings in the account. Despite the extraordinary amount mentioned in the banking information, he was unable to access even his own money.

Realising that the matter required urgent attention, Samir informed his employer, Dheeraj Sharma, about what had happened. Both men were taken aback by the unusual development and subsequently visited the cyber police station in Sikar to seek assistance.

Police advised them to contact the bank directly to establish the reason behind the restriction. Following their communication with the bank, officials reportedly explained that the incident had resulted from a technical error in the banking system.

The bank subsequently investigated the problem and took steps to correct the fault. Once the technical issue had been resolved, Samir’s account balance was restored to its correct position and normal access to his funds was reinstated.

Speaking about the experience, Samir said he had approximately 55,000 rupees in his account before discovering the problem. He later learnt that a withdrawal restriction involving more than 10,000 crore rupees had been recorded against the account.

He explained that he had been unable to withdraw his own savings and had therefore approached the police before contacting the bank. The matter was eventually resolved after the bank addressed the technical fault.

His employer, Dheeraj Sharma, also expressed surprise at the incident. He said Samir had been working at his establishment since January and received a monthly salary of 10,000 rupees.

Sharma said he was astonished when Samir informed him that a restriction involving 10,000 crore rupees had appeared in his bank account. He added that he had never witnessed anything of this nature before.

The incident highlights how technical errors in banking systems can create unexpected difficulties for ordinary customers. Digital banking has made it easier for people to monitor balances, transfer money and manage their finances through mobile applications. However, when errors occur in account records or transaction controls, customers can face considerable uncertainty, particularly when they suddenly lose access to their savings.

For Samir, the experience was an especially unusual one. A routine mobile recharge led to the discovery of a banking anomaly involving an enormous sum of money. Yet, despite the staggering figure, he could neither claim ownership of the money nor use it.

Instead, the young employee had to seek police assistance and contact his bank simply to regain access to the 55,000 rupees he had saved through his modest monthly earnings. The bank’s correction of the technical error eventually brought the episode to an end, but the incident left him with an experience few ordinary bank customers are likely to encounter.
