Renowned Bangladeshi singer, composer, and music director Bappa Mazumder has opened up about the lesser-known chapters of his storied career, shedding light on his humble beginnings, long-standing creative partnerships, and his cautious approach towards playback singing for mainstream cinema.
Speaking on the podcast show Behind the Fame with RRK, hosted by Rumman Rashid Khan, the iconic musician reflected on a career that spans more than thirty years in the audio industry. Mazumder revealed that before achieving national acclaim, he cut his teeth performing live instrumental sets in hotellerie venues, earning his very first professional fee playing the guitar at the landmark Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka.
That early stint laid the groundwork for what would become one of the modern era’s most enduring musical legacies. Alongside the late singer, writer, and activist Sanjeev Chowdhury, Mazumder co-founded the legendary band Dalchhut. The outfit, celebrated for its poetic lyrics and soulful acoustic arrangements, reaches a significant milestone this November as it marks 30 years since its inception. Over three decades, Dalchhut produced timeless tracks that defined the soundscape of late 1990s and early 2000s Bangladeshi pop-rock culture.
Despite his immense success in the audio market and solo composition space, Mazumder’s presence in film playback music has remained surprisingly selective since his silver-screen debut roughly two decades ago. Addressing this deliberate pacing, the veteran artist attributed his limited film catalogue to personal temperament rather than a lack of opportunity.
“Working in cinema tracks requires constant networking and maintaining industry connections,” Mazumder explained during the interview. “I am exceptionally poor at networking. When you fail to maintain those diplomatic links, the likelihood of landing film projects naturally diminishes.”
Throughout the conversation, the musician touched upon the personal and professional trials that shaped his artistic journey from a struggling guitarist to a household name. The full broadcast of the candid conversation airs simultaneously tonight at 9:00 pm on Maasranga Television and Radio Dinraat 93.6 FM, offering fans a deeper glimpse into the life of one of the nation’s most respected musical figures.
