A mobile financial services agent was severely injured and robbed of BDT 2.2 million in cash after being ambushed by armed assailants while returning home late on Sunday night in Cox’s Bazar Sadar upazila. The victim, identified as Mohammad Sayeed, is currently undergoing treatment in critical condition at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital. Relatives of the victim have accused a local student political leader of orchestrating and executing the violent robbery.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:30 pm on Sunday, 1 November, in the Munshipara area under Ward No. 9 of Jhilongja Union. Sayeed owns and operates a shop named ‘Chhabighar’ in the Khorulia local market, where he provides bKash financial services alongside other telecommunication facilities.
According to the victim’s cousin, Habib, Sayeed had closed his shop at his usual hour and was riding his motorcycle home with the day’s business proceeds. As he reached a quiet stretch near Munshipara, four young men riding two motorcycles intercepted his path, blocking any chance of escape. Without warning, the attackers produced sharp weapons and slashed him indiscriminately across his body. Once Sayeed collapsed onto the road bleeding profusely, the assailants grabbed his bag containing BDT 2.2 million in cash and sped away into the night.
Attracted by Sayeed’s desperate cries for help, local residents rushed to the scene shortly after the attackers fled. Witnesses found him lying in a pool of blood with multiple severe hack wounds. They immediately transported him to the emergency department of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, where attending medical staff admitted him for urgent treatment.
Speaking from the hospital, Habib stated that Sayeed clearly identified one of the key attackers as Khorshed, the President of the Ward No. 9 Jhilongja Union unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. Sayeed informed his family that Khorshed personally spearheaded the ambush, although the victim could not recognise the remaining three accomplices due to the darkness.
Acknowledging the incident, Sheikh Mohammad Ali, Officer-in-Charge of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station, confirmed that police officers were dispatched to the crime scene to collect evidence and interview potential witnesses. Law enforcement officials assured that a thorough investigation is underway and swift legal action will be taken against all individuals involved once a formal complaint is filed.
The violent attack on a prominent local trader has sent shockwaves through the local business community in Khorulia Bazar. Expressing anxiety over night-time security on rural roads, shopkeepers and residents have demanded the immediate arrest of the suspects and the recovery of the stolen money.
