Finland Invites Singles Worldwide on Free Culinary Dating Experience

Finland, consistently ranked as the world’s happiest country, has launched an unusual matchmaking campaign inviting singles from across the globe on an unforgettable blind date experience. Reported by Forbes, the Nordic nation’s national tourism board, Visit Finland, is spearheading the initiative. The campaign aims to introduce international travellers to authentic Finnish food culture while offering them a genuine opportunity to fall in love.

Titled ‘Finnish Dinner Date’, the all-expenses-paid programme will select sixteen single individuals from various countries to participate in a ten-day journey scheduled between 9 and 19 February 2027. Selected participants will travel across the country, tasting regional delicacies crafted by some of Finland’s premier chefs. The curated menus will feature traditional, locally sourced ingredients such as wild fish, fresh berries, and wild mushrooms harvested directly from Nordic forests.

The main highlight of the trip involves a series of group dinner dates held in the capital city of Helsinki and the vibrant city of Tampere, situated in the picturesque Lakeland region. During these communal dining events, international guests will meet and mingle with local Finnish singles. Heli Jimenez, Senior Director of International Marketing at Business Finland, explained in an official statement that local gastronomy is an intrinsic expression of the country’s joyful lifestyle. She noted that food bridges connections between people, seasons, and surroundings, creating an ideal setting for romantic chemistry to flourish.

The romantic initiative draws inspiration from a unique local dating culture known in Finland as ‘Sinkkorori’, or the single basket trend. Several Finnish supermarket chains introduced bright pink shopping baskets, allowing single shoppers to discreetly signal to fellow customers that they are open to conversation or potential dating. Building on this social phenomenon, tourism officials decided to expand the concept onto an international stage.

Tourism authorities acknowledge that while Italian, Chinese, and other Nordic culinary traditions enjoy widespread global popularity, Finnish cuisine remains one of Europe’s most underrated food cultures. From traditional sauna rituals to foraging in pristine woodlands, Finnish gastronomy tells a distinctive story rooted in nature. By bringing singles together over shared meals, organisers hope visitors might find love with fellow participants, develop a passion for Finnish cuisine, or fall in love with their new favourite holiday destination.
