Bangladesh Introduces QR-Based Transfers Between Individuals

Bangladesh Bank has introduced a new person-to-person (P2P) payment service using Bangla QR codes, allowing individuals to transfer money without manually entering the recipient’s mobile phone number or bank account details. The initiative is expected to make everyday financial transactions simpler, faster and more convenient while encouraging wider use of digital payments across the country.

The service officially came into operation on Sunday (1 November), marking a new development in Bangladesh’s digital payment system. Under the arrangement, customers can send money directly to another individual by scanning the recipient’s Bangla QR code through their banking or mobile financial service application.

Previously, customers generally had to enter a recipient’s mobile number or account details when transferring money. The new system offers an alternative that reduces the need for manual data entry. Once a customer scans the recipient’s QR code, the relevant identification and transaction details can be checked before the payment is completed.

The introduction of this facility is part of Bangladesh Bank’s broader efforts to expand digital financial services and make electronic transactions more accessible to ordinary people. By simplifying the payment process, the central bank aims to reduce reliance on physical cash and encourage individuals to adopt convenient digital alternatives for routine financial activities.

Bangla QR codes have already been used extensively for merchant payments at shops, restaurants, business establishments and other commercial outlets. Customers can scan a merchant’s QR code using a compatible banking or financial service application to pay for goods and services without handling cash.

The latest development extends the technology beyond commercial transactions. With the introduction of person-to-person payments, individuals can now use the same QR-based system to transfer money directly to one another.

The service could prove particularly useful for everyday financial exchanges, including repaying friends, sending money to family members, settling personal debts and making small payments. It may also reduce the inconvenience associated with repeatedly entering lengthy account numbers or mobile numbers, particularly when making frequent transfers.

Another potential benefit is the reduction of errors caused by manually entering payment details. However, customers will still need to check the recipient’s identity and transaction information carefully before confirming a transfer. As with other digital payment services, maintaining the confidentiality of personal identification numbers, passwords and one-time passwords will remain essential to protecting financial accounts.

The expansion of QR-based payments also reflects a broader shift in Bangladesh’s financial sector towards cashless transactions. Digital payment systems can make money transfers more convenient and provide electronic records of transactions, which may help individuals manage their finances more effectively.

However, the success of the new facility will depend on how widely banks and financial service providers support it, as well as how easily customers can access and use the technology. Public awareness, reliable digital infrastructure and appropriate security measures will also be important in building confidence in the service.

Bangladesh Bank has been working to modernise the country’s payment infrastructure and increase the use of electronic transactions. The expansion of Bangla QR codes into person-to-person transfers represents another step in that effort.

The initiative is expected to create fresh opportunities for digital payments by bringing QR-based money transfers into people’s everyday financial activities. It also marks another move towards the government’s broader ambition of building a cashless Bangladesh, where digital payment options become an increasingly familiar part of daily life.
