A devastating road traffic accident on the Dhaka-Chittagong highwaynear Mirsarai, Chittagong, has resulted in the death of a young truck helper and left two others critically injured. The incident unfolded in the early hours of Monday morning, highlighting ongoing safety concerns along one of Bangladesh’s busiest vehicular corridors.
The collision took place at approximately 6:00 AM in front of the Main Uddin Filling Station within the Baraiyarhat municipality zone. According to local law enforcement sources, both vehicles were traveling along the Chittagong-bound lane when the lead truck executed a sudden, sharp application of its brakes. Unable to stop in time, the trailing heavy vehicle struck the rear of the front truck with considerable force.
The violent impact reduced the cabin of the second truck to a wreckage of twisted metal, trapping the driver and two assistants inside the crushed driver’s compartment. Emergency services confirmed that 20-year-old Milan, who was serving as the assistant onboard the rear truck, succumbed to severe physical trauma on the spot. The driver, 35-year-old Manik, alongside another assistant, 37-year-old Billal, suffered major injury in the collision.
Local residents alerted emergency responders via the national emergency helpline ‘999’. Teams from the Jorarganj Highway Police and the Baraiyarhat Fire Service and Civil Defence quickly dispatched units to the site. Baraiyarhat Fire Station Officer Zainul Abedin Titas noted that emergency personnel worked alongside community volunteers using specialized cutting gear to extract the victims trapped within the mangled cabin structure.
Following the rescue operation, paramedics rushed the injured men to the Mirsarai Upazila Health Complex for primary medical care. As their physiological status deteriorated due to severe trauma, medical officers transferred both survivors to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for urgent tertiary treatment.
Officer-in-Charge Rakibul Hasan of the Jorarganj Highway Police confirmed the incident, adding that officers impounded both heavy vehicles and cleared the highway lane to maintain traffic flow. Law enforcement personnel have initiated legal proceedings and an official inquiry to assess responsibility and determine the exact circumstances surrounding the sudden braking event.
