A profound wave of grief has swept through Berilabari village in Lalpur upazila, under the Natore district, following a poignant tragedy on Monday afternoon. Two young children from the same neighbourhood lost their lives after accidentally slipping into a pond situated adjacent to their homes.
The deceased toddlers have been identified as two-and-a-half-year-old Mosammat Shiuli Khatun, daughter of Serajul Haque, and two-year-old Mosammat Afia Khatun, daughter of Anarul Islam. Both families reside in Berilabari village, where the close-knit rural community has been left utterly devastated by the sudden loss.
Local residents and police authorities confirmed that the incident occurred around noon on 2 November. The two children were playing together near their residences when, unnoticed by family members, they wandered off towards a nearby body of water and subsequently tumbled into the pond. Upon realising the children were missing, anxious relatives initiated a frantic search across the homestead premises and surrounding grounds. Their search ended in heart-breaking fashion when both toddlers were retrieved unresponsive from the water.
Distraught family members immediately rushed the victims to Bagha Upazila Health Complex in the neighbouring district for urgent medical intervention. However, the attending physician pronounced both children dead on arrival. News of the dual fatality quickly spread across the area, casting a heavy pall of sorrow over Berilabari as grieving relatives mourned the untimely demise of the youngsters.
Acknowledging the incident, Md Shafiqul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Lalpur Police Station, stated that preliminary enquiries alongside statements gathered from family members and local residents confirmed drowning as the cause of death. He added that official legal procedures were promptly initiated, registering an unnatural death (UD) case. Following necessary police documentation and legal formalities, authorities initiated the process of releasing the bodies to the bereaved parents without an autopsy, as requested by the families and permitted by regulations in undisputed drowning incidents.
Rural water bodies pose a persistent hazard across Bangladesh, where ponds, canals, and ditches surrounding residential homesteads frequently lead to unintentional drowning incidents among unattended infants and toddlers, particularly during unstructured playtime. Local authorities continue to advocate for heightened vigilance among rural households to safeguard young children around open sources of water.
