Police Sub-Inspector Dies After Gunshot at Ashuganj Outpost

A police sub-inspector died after shooting himself in the head with his officially issued service pistol at a police outpost in Ashuganj, Brahmanbaria, on Wednesday morning.

The deceased was identified as Jahangir Alam Talukdar, 52, who was assigned to a police outpost responsible for providing security at a fertiliser factory in Ashuganj. He was originally from Purba Khabashpur village under Kotwali Police Station in Faridpur district.

The incident took place at approximately 7.20am on Wednesday, 4 November, inside his room at the police outpost. According to police and local sources, Jahangir was in his room when he suddenly fired his service pistol at his own head.

Hearing the gunshot, fellow police personnel rushed to the room and found him lying in a blood-soaked condition. They immediately went to his aid, but the incident resulted in his death.

Initial information suggests that family-related disputes may have been behind the incident. However, the suspected motive has not yet been established, and the police have not reached any definitive conclusion about the circumstances surrounding his death.

The incident has prompted senior police officials and members of various investigative units to visit the scene. Authorities have begun the formal process of preparing an inquest report, which is required to document the condition of the body and the circumstances in which the death occurred.

Preparations are also under way to send the body for a post-mortem examination. The examination is expected to help establish the precise cause of death and provide further information relevant to the investigation.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration) in Brahmanbaria, Arafatul Islam, said the family of the deceased officer had been informed of the incident.

He said the authorities would complete the necessary legal formalities, prepare the inquest report and conduct a post-mortem examination before drawing conclusions about the circumstances of the death.

The exact reasons behind the incident remain unclear. Although family discord has emerged as a possible explanation in the initial assessment, officials have stressed that the circumstances will become clearer after the necessary investigative and medical procedures have been completed.

The death of the 52-year-old officer has also raised questions about the circumstances leading to the incident inside a police facility. The authorities are expected to establish the sequence of events through the investigation and relevant examination reports.
