The Ministry of Food has announced that the country presently holds over 2.13 million metric tonnes of food grains, combining rice and wheat stocks. This information was disclosed recently in a media briefing, according to reports by the Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS).

Breakdown of Government Food Grain Stocks

Food Grain Current Stock (Metric Tonnes) Planned Import by December 2025 (Metric Tonnes)
Rice 1,954,000 500,000
Wheat 177,000 400,000
Total 2,131,000 900,000

Food Grain Procurement and Distribution

In the current year, government efforts have resulted in the collection of:

  • 535,000 metric tonnes of paddy (unmilled rice)
  • 1,967,000 metric tonnes of rice

Compared to the previous year, paddy procurement has increased by 261,000 metric tonnes, and rice procurement has risen by approximately 202,000 metric tonnes.

During the 2024-25 fiscal year, a record total of 3,305,000 metric tonnes of food grains were distributed, marking the highest amount in the nation’s history. This distribution exceeded the previous fiscal year’s figure by 44,000 metric tonnes.

Diversification of Wheat Imports

The Ministry stated that efforts are underway to diversify wheat import sources. To date, wheat has been imported from the United States, Argentina, Bulgaria, and Ukraine. Plans for the 2025-26 fiscal year include continuing imports from multiple countries to ensure stable supply

Food Supply Stability and Storage Capacity Expansion

To maintain stability in the country’s food supply, both government and private sectors have increased imports. The stock target for food grains up to December this year is set at over 1.5 million metric tonnes.

In order to enhance food grain storage capacity, various initiatives have been implemented. During the 2024-25 fiscal year, government storage capacity stood at 2,341,000 metric tonnes. The completion of four new modern silos in Madhupur, Barisal, Mymensingh, and Narayanganj has increased this capacity to 2,388,000 metric tonnes.

The government aims to further increase storage capacity to 2,684,000 metric tonnes by December 2025.

Summary Table: Food Grain Storage Capacity Over Time

Year / Period Storage Capacity (Metric Tonnes) Key Developments
2024-25 Fiscal Year 2,341,000 Initial government storage capacity
Current 2,388,000 Addition of 4 modern silos completed
Target (Dec 2025) 2,684,000 Planned capacity expansion underway

The Ministry’s strategic focus on diversifying import sources, increasing procurement, and expanding storage facilities aims to ensure a steady and secure food grain supply throughout Bangladesh.
