At least four political activists sustained injuries when rival factions of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) collided near the Municipal Super Market in Kasba, Brahmanbaria, on Wednesday evening. The violence erupted at approximately 7:00 pm on 4 November following escalating intra-party tension over the announcement of a new local executive committee.
Local sources and hospital authorities confirmed that the injured men are Shahidul Kha of Toitua village, Jewel Mia of Dakshin Kasba, Rabbi Mia of Kharpara, and Rashidul Islam Russel of Chornal village. All four victims received emergency medical care and were subsequently admitted to the Kasba Upazila Health Complex for further treatment.
The confrontation stemmed from a decision by the Brahmanbaria district unit of JCD on 1 November to approve a partial upazila committee naming Sirajul Haq Emu as president. The appointment sparked immediate resentment among factional rivals and activists who felt excluded from the new leadership structure. Opposing members had been staging protests across the upazila for several days. Tension boiled over on Wednesday when Emu’s supporters organised a victory rally through the municipal area, prompting an aggressive confrontation with aggrieved rivals that quickly degenerated into physical violence and brought panic to local shopkeepers.
Following the outbreak of violence, newly appointed committee president Sirajul Haq Emu convened an emergency press conference. Speaking to reporters, Emu alleged that the assault on his celebration procession had been carried out under the direct instructions of Mushfiqur Rahman, the sitting Member of Parliament for the Kasba-Akhaura constituency.
Local political observers noted that the four activists admitted to hospital are known loyalists of MP Mushfiqur Rahman. However, representatives for the lawmaker have not issued any official statement regarding the allegations or the violence.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kasba Police Station, Ali Mohammad Rashed, stated that a police contingent was dispatched immediately to bring the situation under control. He confirmed that order has been restored in the area, adding that law enforcement officers will initiate formal legal action once a written complaint is lodged by either party.
