The collision occurred at around 10am in the Baithamari Burunga area on the Jamalpur-Melandaha road. Three people died at the scene, while another succumbed to injuries after being taken to hospital.
The deceased were identified as Morshed Alam, 25, his wife Ikrama, 23, and their eight-month-old daughter, Rifa. The family were residents of Indullamari village in Islampur upazila of Jamalpur district. The fourth victim was identified as Shawkat Hasan Likhon.
According to local sources, an auto-rickshaw was travelling from Melandaha towards Jamalpur when a truck approaching from behind struck it with considerable force. The impact also involved a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction, which was caught beneath the truck.
The collision left several people injured and caused three immediate fatalities. Local residents rushed to the scene following the crash and assisted with the rescue operation. Police also arrived shortly afterwards and helped recover the victims.
The injured were taken to Jamalpur General Hospital for medical treatment. Shawkat Hasan Likhon later died there from his injuries, bringing the death toll to four.
The deaths of three members of the same family, including an infant, have made the incident particularly distressing. The loss of a young couple and their baby in a single road accident has added to concerns over the safety of passengers travelling on busy regional roads.
Road accidents involving heavy vehicles and smaller passenger transports remain a serious safety concern in Bangladesh. Auto-rickshaws, which are widely used for short- and medium-distance journeys, are particularly vulnerable when involved in collisions with larger vehicles. The difference in size and weight between trucks and three-wheelers often leaves passengers with little protection during a serious impact.
The circumstances of Saturday’s collision have not yet been fully established. Questions surrounding the truck’s movement, the sequence of the collision and the factors that led to the motorcycle becoming involved will be relevant to the investigation.
Confirming the incident, Melandaha Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) ATM Mahmudul Haque said police reached the scene after receiving information about the accident and rescued the deceased and injured passengers.
He added that the truck involved in the collision had been seized by police.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the need for greater caution among drivers, particularly those operating heavy vehicles on roads shared with smaller passenger transports and motorcycles. Proper speed control, safe following distances and responsible driving are essential to reducing the risk of such devastating collisions.
