Bystanders and Staff Foil Bus Arson Attempt in Mirpur

Miscreants attempted to set fire to a passenger bus in the Mirpur-12 area of Dhaka on Saturday night, but the prompt action of bus staff and local residents successfully thwarted the arson attempt. The incident occurred at around 10:00 pm beneath the Pallabi metro rail station, targeting a vehicle belonging to Bihanga Paribahan. Although no casualties were reported, the upper portions of two seats at the rear of the bus were partially charred.

Confirming the incident, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Mirpur Division) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Hassan Mohammad Nasser Rikabder, stated that the bus had just completed its final trip for the day and was parked empty along the street. He noted that the absence of passengers at the time of the attack prevented potential injuries or loss of life.

According to police details, the bus crew members were inside the illuminated vehicle counting their daily fare collections when unidentified miscreants set fire to the exterior of the bus before attempting to flee. Detecting flames and smoke near the back of the vehicle, the crew immediately shouted for assistance and, with the help of nearby residents, poured water on the fire to bring it under control rapidly. Police officers have commenced an investigation and are reviewing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from surrounding establishments to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.

The attempted arson in Mirpur marks the latest in a series of targeted attacks on commercial and public transport vehicles across the capital. On Friday evening, miscreants set fire to a passenger bus operated by Baishakhi Paribahan on Pragati Sarani in the Baridhara area. Just a day prior, an explosion and subsequent fire broke out in a courier service covered van in front of Rayerbazar Krishi Market, leaving the driver injured. The recurring nature of these violent incidents within short succession has heightened security concerns among commuters, transport operators, and residents across Dhaka.
