Bangladesh Under-19s produced a spirited performance to defeat Sri Lanka Under-19s by 45 runs in their second Group B match of the Youth Asia Cup at the Al Amerat Cricket Ground in Oman. The victory revived their semi-final qualification hopes following a disastrous 113-run defeat against Afghanistan in their tournament opener.
Batting first after losing the toss, Bangladesh mounted a competitive total of 245 all out in 49.4 overs. The innings was anchored by resolute half-centuries from Al Ahsan Momin and Jarif Siam, who steadied the middle order against a disciplined Sri Lankan attack. Their solid partnerships laid a strong foundation, allowing the lower order to push the total past the 240-run mark despite a late flurry of wickets in the final over.
Defending 245, Bangladesh’s bowling attack executed their plans with precision, reducing Sri Lanka to 200 all out with 23 balls to spare. Sri Lankan opener Senuja Vekunagoda mounted a valiant solo effort, scoring 85 off 95 deliveries, but received little support from the opposite end as wickets fell at regular intervals. A disciplined collective effort from the Bangladeshi bowlers ensured the Sri Lankan chase never gained sustained momentum.
The Bangladeshi bowling unit shared the rewards evenly across their attack. Fast bowler Tafiul Alam Tamim, Sheikh Atikur Rahman, Rubaid Islam Rizon, and Robiul Hasan Onik claimed two wickets apiece, maintaining tight control over the run rate and striking at crucial moments throughout the innings to seal the 45-run victory.
Despite securing the crucial win, Bangladesh remain in a challenging position within Group B. Group leaders Afghanistan have virtually sealed their semi-final spot following back-to-back victories by substantial margins. Whilst both Sri Lanka and Bangladesh currently sit on two points each, Bangladesh trail Sri Lanka on Net Run Rate (NRR) due to their opening heavy loss. Consequently, the young Tigers must secure a comprehensive high-margin victory against Malaysia in their final group fixture to stand a chance of advancing to the semi-finals.
