The Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Jasad) commemorated the historic 7 November Sepoy-People’s Uprising of 1975 on Saturday, paying tribute to Sector Commander Colonel Abu Taher, Bir Uttam, as the primary architect of the revolutionary movement. The central committee of Jasad organised a wreath-laying ceremony and discussion meeting at 4:00 pm at the Shahid Colonel Taher Auditorium near the General Post Office (GPO) in Dhaka.
Chaired by Jasad Central Committee Vice-President Mir Hossain Akhtar and moderated by Public Relations Secretary Shariful Kabir Swapan, the meeting gathered prominent leaders from the party and its associate bodies. Speakers included Jasad Vice-Presidents Freedom Fighter Shafi Uddin Molla and Joint General Secretaries Showkat Raihan, Naimul Ahsan Jewel, and Obaidur Rahman Chunnu. Other key speakers included National Labour Alliance President Freedom Fighter Saifuzzaman Badsha, Jasad Treasurer Monir Hossain, Office Secretary Sajjad Hossain, Dhaka Metropolitan West Vice-President Advocate Abu Hanif, Central Committee Members Kazi Saimul Haq and Parvez Akhtar Shilpi, Youth Alliance Vice-President Shubhankar De Bappa, Labour Alliance Joint General Secretary Sardar Khorshed, and Bangladesh Chhatra League (Jasad) Vice-President Golam Kibria.
Addressing the gathering, party leaders asserted that the uprising of 7 November 1975 was an organised revolutionary effort by general soldiers to halt chaos orchestrated by power-hungry military officers. They emphasised that the movement aimed to transform the discriminatory state structure inherited from the colonial era. Spearheaded by the Biplobi Sainik Sangstha (Revolutionary Soldiers’ Organisation) and led by Freedom Fighter Colonel Abu Taher, the uprising sought to restore order within the armed forces during a critical national crisis.
Speakers highlighted Jasad’s decisive role during the unrest, maintaining that the party’s intervention prevented further bloodshed and factional infighting among military officers. They pointed out that Jasad’s actions saved the lives of numerous military personnel, including then Chief of Army Staff Major General Ziaur Rahman. However, speakers expressed deep regret over subsequent events, condemning the betrayal of the soldiers’ 12-point demands and the execution of Colonel Taher following a trial by an illegal military tribunal.
The leaders characterised the prosecution and imprisonment of senior Jasad figures—including founder Sirajul Alam Khan, then President Major MA Jalil, General Secretary ASM Abdur Rab, Hasanul Haq Inu, Rabiul Alam, Major Ziauddin, and Sergeant Yusuf—as a dark chapter of betrayal in Bangladeshi political history. Similar commemorative discussions, wreath-laying ceremonies, and events were observed by Jasad’s district and upazila units across the country.
