Police Reveal Motive Behind Journalist Tuhin’s Murder

The brutal murder of journalist Asaduzzaman Tuhin in Gazipur was linked to his filming of an attack on a man named Badsha, police have revealed. Tuhin was hacked to death with a machete in front of hundreds of bystanders in what authorities described as a targeted killing by a criminal group.

Details of the Killing

According to CCTV footage, several youths chased and attacked Badsha with machetes. As journalist Tuhin attempted to capture the event on video, he was suddenly attacked by the same group. The assailants hacked him repeatedly with machetes until he collapsed and died in public view.

Police recovered his body from the scene and sent it to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital Morgue for a post-mortem examination.

Eyewitness Account from Badsha

Badsha, who was injured in the initial assault, stated:

“While crossing the road, a woman tried to extort money from me. I pushed her away. Soon after, some attackers chased and injured me with machetes.”

Statements from Authorities

  • Additional Deputy Police Commissioner (Crime – North), Gazipur Metropolitan Police, Md. Rabiul Islam said:

“On Thursday evening in the Chandna Chowrasta area, a group led by a woman targeted a man. When the man resisted and slapped the woman, her accomplices attacked him. When journalist Tuhin tried to record the scene, they turned on him and brutally murdered him.”

  • Officer-in-Charge (OC), Basan Police Station, Shahin Khan confirmed:

“Tuhin’s elder brother has filed a case against unidentified persons regarding the murder.”

Parallel Case: Journalist Anwar Hossain Assaulted

A second journalist, Anwar Hossain, was also violently attacked in a separate incident in Gazipur Sadar area. His mother, Anwara Begum, filed a case on Thursday night. One individual has been arrested in connection with this attack.

  • OC of Sadar Police Station, Mehedi Hasan said:

“One person has been arrested in the case filed for the brutal assault on Anwar Hossain.”

Viral Footage and Allegations

A video from 6 August showed Anwar being dragged and beaten, which went viral on social media. According to relatives and colleagues, the assault was allegedly retaliation for Anwar’s reporting on extortion rackets in the area. His legs were smashed with stones, and he was repeatedly punched and kicked by the assailants.

The dual attacks on journalists have sparked outrage and despair among the local journalism community. Colleagues and family members are demanding swift justice and strict punishment for the perpetrators.
