The iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground, revered as the “Home of Cricket,” is offering cricket enthusiasts a unique opportunity—owning a piece of its hallowed turf. In a move both symbolic and practical, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has announced that sections of the outfield grass will be up for sale.

Fans will be able to purchase individual turfs measuring 1.2 metres by 0.6 metres for £50 each—equivalent to over ৳8,000 in Bangladeshi currency. The sale is open not only to MCC’s 25,000 members, but also to the general public.

The initiative is part of an upcoming renovation of the outfield, scheduled to begin in September 2025. The MCC’s message to its members reads:

“As part of future ground development and to raise funds for the MCC Foundation, we’re offering you the chance to own a piece of the Lord’s outfield – a stage where countless historic cricketing moments were born.”

The MCC confirmed that while the central square of the ground will remain untouched, the top 15mm of the outfield grass will be removed and reseeded with new turf. This update follows recent concerns where outfield grass was easily displaced during diving fielding attempts, prompting the need for a sturdier surface.

A Living Symbol of Cricket Heritage

Founded in 1814, Lord’s is far more than a cricket ground. It houses:

  • The world’s oldest sports museum
  • The largest cricket library
  • The headquarters of MCC, England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), and ICC Europe

It was formerly home to the International Cricket Council (ICC) headquarters. Many cricketers consider playing at Lord’s the pinnacle of their careers. Having one’s name etched on the famed Honours Board—for scoring a century or taking five wickets—is a lifelong dream for many.

Recent fixtures at Lord’s include the prestigious Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series between England and India and the ongoing The Hundred tournament.

A Chance to Bring Lord’s Home

In a tweet from Lord’s official X (formerly Twitter) page, the club declared:

“This autumn, as we reconstruct the iconic outfield of Lord’s, you have the rare opportunity to bring home a piece of sacred turf. Limited in quantity! Available for collection only on 29 & 30 September 2025 from Lord’s. Don’t miss out!”

This isn’t the first time turf from Lord’s has gone on sale. During the 2002 renovation, patches were sold at £10 each, raising £35,000 in total. In one remarkable case, a fan spent £1,260 to turf his entire lawn with grass from Lord’s.

A Piece of History Beneath Your Feet

For cricket devotees, this is more than a collector’s item—it’s a fragment of history. Whether displayed in a garden or preserved as memorabilia, each square of Lord’s grass carries with it echoes of centuries, sixes, and unforgettable sporting drama.
