A portion of the assets belonging to Saifuzzaman Chowdhury, former Land Minister of Bangladesh, is now being sold in the United Kingdom to settle outstanding debts.
According to a report by the British daily The Telegraph on Monday, 11 August, six housing companies owned by Saifuzzaman have entered administration. These companies were responsible for managing his various UK-based properties.
Background to the Asset Sale
The matter came to light after Bangladeshi authorities launched an investigation into his alleged illegal wealth. Reports indicate that he owns over 300 houses, flats, and apartments in the UK, collectively valued at approximately £170 million. He is accused of having acquired these properties through money laundering from Bangladesh.
In June, acting on a request from Bangladeshi authorities, the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) seized several of his assets, including:
| Property Type | Location | Estimated Value |
| Luxury residence | St. John’s Wood, North London | £11 million |
| Multiple high-value flats | Fitzrovia, Central London | Not disclosed |
Current Developments
Administrators from UK-based asset management firm Grant Thornton have been tasked with selling a number of Saifuzzaman’s residential buildings located in London and several towns across South-East England.
The proceeds from these sales will be used to repay creditors, including:
| Creditor | Country / Location |
| DBS Bank | Singapore |
| British Arab Commercial Bank | United Kingdom |
| United Commercial Bank (UCB) | Bangladesh – claiming approximately USD 350 million |
Political and Legal Context
Following the 5 August 2024 student–public uprising that led to the fall of the Awami League government, Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) began a large-scale hunt for illegally acquired assets both domestically and abroad.
Alongside Saifuzzaman’s holdings, the NCA has also seized London-based assets belonging to:
| Name | Relation / Role |
| Ahmed Shayan F. Rahman | Son of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s adviser Salman F. Rahman |
| Ahmed Shahriar Rahman | Nephew of Salman F. Rahman |
These seizures form part of an ongoing investigation into high-profile corruption and cross-border financial crimes involving former political figures from Bangladesh.
