After an unprecedented looting of stones at the Sada Pathar tourist site in Bholaganj, Companyganj Upazila, Sylhet, which has left the area largely stripped of stones, the district administration has formed an investigation committee. An additional Deputy Commissioner has been appointed to head the committee.
The announcement was confirmed by Sylhet District Commissioner Mohammad Sher Mahbub Murad on the evening of Tuesday, 12 August.
He stated: “Following media reports on the issue, we have formed an investigation committee. A meeting has been called to review the matter. Our operations are ongoing; the task force conducted a raid yesterday and will continue its efforts in the coming days.”
Urgent Coordination Meeting on Stone Extraction Scheduled
The District Commissioner further added: “An urgent coordination meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday, 13 August, to discuss the extraction of sand and stones at Sada Pathar and other tourist spots such as Jaflong. The matter will be thoroughly discussed during the meeting.”
Background of the Looting Incident
Sada Pathar, one of Sylhet’s prominent tourist destinations, has been subject to open and unrestricted looting of stones since 5 August last year.
Recent unrestrained looting has left Sada Pathar significantly depleted.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation in the media and across social media platforms.
Political Repercussions
In response to the ongoing situation, all positions of Sahab Uddin, President of the Companyganj Upazila BNP, were suspended by the party on Monday night.
