BNP Leader Summoned Over Threatening Remarks

Abdul Gafur Bhuiya, a BNP leader, has been issued a show-cause notice following allegations that he threatened to “tear open the heart” of Professor Md. Shamsul Islam, Chairman of the Comilla Education Board, and for reportedly keeping educational institutions in Nangalkot closed to hold a party conference.

The notice, signed on Friday (15 August) by Selim Bhuiya, Organisational Secretary of BNP’s Comilla Division, requires Abdul Gafur to respond within three working days. Copies of the notice were also sent to the Acting Chairman, Secretary General, Joint Secretary General, Divisional Organisational Secretary, and the Convener of Comilla South District BNP.

Background of Abdul Gafur Bhuiya

  • Political Career: Elected as Member of Parliament in 2001 from Nangalkot under BNP nomination.
  • Current Position: Member of Comilla South District BNP.

According to the notice:

  1. A statement made by Bhuiya involving the Education Board Chairman and the District Commissioner went viral on social media.
  2. On 11–12 August, multiple educational institutions in Nangalkot were reportedly kept closed to conduct Union-level BNP conferences, causing disruption.

Sources at the Comilla Education Board stated that during the selection of a president for Volain Bazar High School and College, Mir Abu Saleh Shamsuddin was appointed among three proposed candidates. In response, Gafur Bhuiya allegedly called the Education Board Chairman, using abusive language and threats, saying: “Who put you in this chair? How big is their heart? I will tear their heart open and yours too.”

The situation reportedly calmed after the presidential position was changed within 24 hours.

Reactions and Organisational Steps

  • Several BNP leaders in Nangalkot, speaking on condition of anonymity, stressed the need for strict action against those involved in controversial activities.
  • Selim Bhuiya, Organisational Secretary of BNP Comilla Division, stated: “BNP believes in a positive approach. If anyone is involved in controversial activities, organisational measures will certainly be taken.”

Regarding the show-cause notice, Abdul Gafur Bhuiya said he has received it and will submit his response within the stipulated time.
