PR System Anti-Islamic, Claims Nezam-e-Islam Party

Maulana A.K.M. Ashraful Haque, Executive President of the Bangladesh Nezam-e-Islam Party, has stated that constituency-based elections are a settled matter, offering no scope for reform.

In a statement sent to the media on Monday, he said:

“Outside the traditional electoral system, demands are being raised for strange methods such as proportional representation (PR). Surprisingly, even some Islamic parties have joined this demand. Yet Islam instructs the public to select capable and honest individuals to govern the state, not political parties or symbols. Therefore, the PR system is anti-Islamic.”

Maulana Ashraful Haque further alleged that the demand for PR is essentially a conspiracy to rehabilitate the Awami League. According to him, under such a system, the government and the state would always remain weak, forced to yield to foreign influence.

He described the PR system as a foreign-imposed electoral framework and warned:

“It will serve as a tool to sustain corrupt fascism. In the future, no single constituency would allow the Awami League or its allies to win outright. Yet, due to the complexities of proportional allocation, they would still obtain seats—something the public would never accept.”

He added:

“Those advocating for so-called PR elections are attempting to implement a foreign agenda. However, if elections are conducted fairly and impartially, many of their cautions and guarantees would be forfeited.”

In summary, the Nezam-e-Islam Party firmly rejects the PR electoral system, viewing it as un-Islamic, foreign-influenced, and detrimental to national governance.
