The government has appointed Md. Sarwar Alam, a high-profile administrative officer, as the Deputy Commissioner (DC) and District Magistrate of Sylhet. The Ministry of Public Administration, Field Administration-2 branch, issued the official notification on Monday, 18 August.
The notification states that Sarwar Alam, an officer of the BCS (Administration) cadre, has been transferred and posted as the DC of Sylhet.
“This order, issued in the public interest, takes immediate effect,” the notification read.
Currently, Sarwar Alam serves as Senior Assistant Secretary at the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment. He gained widespread recognition earlier for leading mobile courts, taking an active role in anti-corruption and anti-adulteration campaigns across the country.
Sarwar Alam was born in Kishoreganj and began his education at Ismail Memorial Government Primary School in 1983. He completed his SSC in 1993 from Pakundia Pilot High School (now Pakundia Government High School) and HSC in 1995 from Kishoreganj Gurudayal Government College, passing both with first division.
He then enrolled in the Department of Zoology at Dhaka University, where he earned his master’s degree in 2005, graduating first class.
Alam joined the civil administration after passing the 27th BCS (Administration) exam in 2008.
In 2009, he married Sanjida Sharmin Linder from Chattogram, and the couple have four daughters: Mahrin Samara, Nazifa Safrin, Tanha, and Manha.
Sarwar Alam’s appointment as Sylhet DC is closely watched due to his reputation for strict administrative measures and proactive stance against corruption, making him a prominent figure in Bangladesh’s civil service.
