Real Madrid have entered this transfer window determined to strengthen their defence. So far, they have signed young Spanish defender Dine Huissen, acquired Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool, and added Carreras from Porto. Before the window closes, Madrid may bring in one more defender to complete their defensive line.
The player reportedly on Real Madrid’s radar has been the subject of transfer rumours for some time: Liverpool’s central defender Ibrahima Konaté. According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Liverpool are asking for €35 million for Konaté. However, Real Madrid are currently undecided and appear willing to wait before making any move.
Konaté’s current contract with Liverpool runs only until the end of this season. He could join Real Madrid on a free transfer next season, which is why Liverpool prefer to set a price now rather than risk losing him for nothing. Meanwhile, Liverpool have strengthened their defensive options by signing the 18-year-old Italian defender Giovanni Leon. This reduces the club’s reliance on Konaté, making his potential departure manageable.
At Real Madrid, central defender Éder Militão remains central to coach Xabi Alonso’s plans, though he is prone to injuries. The squad also includes experienced defenders Antonio Rüdiger and David Alaba, with young talent Raúl Asensio registered as well. Overall, Madrid currently do not face a shortage of defenders, but last season injuries to Militão, Alaba, Carvajal, and Lucas Vázquez caused serious difficulties.
Football analysts argue that despite having attacking stars like Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Jr., Real Madrid’s inability to win certain trophies last season was largely due to defensive injuries. Strengthening the backline remains a priority for Los Blancos.
