Inter Miami continues to become a hub for Lionel Messi’s national team colleagues. Most recently, the club signed Rodrigo De Paul from Atlético Madrid, another teammate of Messi. Now, attention has turned to Argentina’s World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.
Transfer Talks Underway
According to Canadian football news outlet ‘Waking the Red’, Inter Miami has already initiated discussions with Martínez. But what prompted the club to pursue him so urgently?
- Goalkeeper Departure: Miami’s current goalkeeper, Drew Callender, recently transferred to Charlotte FC, freeing up a significant amount of General Allocation Money (GAM) for the club.
- Financial Strategy: The GAM from Callender’s transfer can now be used to bring Martínez from Aston Villa to South Florida.
Martínez’s Career at Aston Villa
- Arrival: Joined Aston Villa in September 2020 from Arsenal.
- Status: Has been the club’s first-choice goalkeeper since joining.
- Recent Developments: Martínez did not feature in Villa’s opening match against Newcastle this season, sparking speculation about his future.
Transfer Valuation
- Aston Villa is reportedly demanding a transfer fee between €17 million and €40 million for Martínez.
- His emotional farewell in his last match for Villa has fuelled further rumours about a potential move.
- Villa has firmly stated that he will not be released without the expected transfer amount.
Inter Miami’s Plan
- The club intends to utilise the GAM obtained from Callender’s trade to bring the 2022 World Cup-winning goalkeeper to DRV PNK Stadium.
- If successful, Martínez will reunite with familiar faces in MLS, strengthening Miami’s squad with a World Cup champion.
This move reflects Inter Miami’s growing ambition to assemble top Argentine talent and build a formidable squad in Major League Soccer.
