Reports have recently surfaced in multiple media outlets concerning allegations of match-fixing in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). These reports have implicated certain franchises and a few cricketers. However, Tamim Iqbal, the former Bangladesh captain, has made it clear that he does not wish to comment on the matter at this stage.
Tamim stressed that it would be inappropriate to speak publicly until the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officially publishes its findings. Speaking to journalists on Tuesday after meeting with physically challenged cricketers, he stated: “I have seen the matter exactly the way you have. We do not yet know how reliable that report is. Those in authority will prepare a report, and if it is published, only then will it be appropriate to discuss it.
Although Tamim has retired from international cricket, he remains deeply engaged in cricket-related activities. The former skipper has been seen holding discussions with the BCB regarding players’ welfare.
On Monday, Tamim visited the Bashundhara Cricket Network to observe the indoor facilities provided for physically challenged cricketers. His visit highlighted his ongoing involvement in initiatives aimed at improving the game at all levels.
During his interaction with the media, Tamim shared a heartfelt message about equality among cricketers, regardless of physical ability or gender: “In my view, everyone who plays cricket and represents Bangladesh should be considered a cricketer. I do not believe in labelling someone as physically challenged, physically unchallenged, or female. Those who represent the nation are cricketers, and they should have only one identity – that of a cricketer.”
He went on to challenge the use of such labels: “We always say that everyone is equal – both in our country and abroad. If that is the case, why do we need tags? My question is simple: if we truly believe everyone is equal, then why these distinctions? They should only be called cricketers.”
Points from Tamim’s Remarks
| Issue | Tamim’s View |
| BPL Fixing Allegations | Too early to comment until BCB officially releases a report. |
| Post-Retirement Involvement | Still actively working with BCB and supporting cricketing initiatives. |
| Physically Challenged Cricketers | Believes they should not be labelled separately – all should be recognised as cricketers. |
| Equality in Cricket | Advocates for removing unnecessary tags and treating everyone equally. |
