Upon Taking Charge, Alex Marshall Vows to Eliminate Corruption from Bangladesh Cricket

The last edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) was marred by widespread allegations of match-fixing, prompting ongoing investigations. In an effort to ensure greater transparency, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has recently appointed Alex Marshall, a former official of the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Anti-Corruption Unit.

Arriving in Dhaka yesterday, Marshall officially assumed his new responsibilities today (Tuesday). Shortly after, he declared his firm commitment to eradicating corruption from Bangladesh cricket.

Following his introductory meetings with cricketers and board officials, Marshall underlined the vulnerabilities of franchise-based leagues: “Franchise leagues are now being played everywhere, and they provide easy opportunities for corrupt individuals. The BPL is a very popular tournament, and everything here must be of the highest quality, professional and secure. Franchise leagues around the world should be safe, and I will work to ensure the same for the BPL.”

Marshall acknowledged that safeguarding the integrity of players remains his foremost challenge.

“Today was my first day. I am grateful to the BCB. We had a very important meeting, where I received everyone’s support. My focus is to ensure that supporters witness genuine cricket and that players remain protected. The work has already begun. I am collaborating with the Board and the President (Aminul Islam Bulbul). Within three to four weeks, I will restructure and present a new framework to the Board. However, long-term education and protection are necessary.”

He emphasised his role as one centred on ensuring honesty and integrity: “I am here to work with the President and the Board, primarily to safeguard integrity. Since the early 2000s, Bangladesh cricket has risen to the top tier of the global game. Fans strongly believe in what they see on the field, and the men and women who represent Bangladesh keep the game clean. However, there is always a need to reinforce security, as opportunities for corruption remain. Corrupt actors seek ways to influence players so that they underperform.”

Marshall highlighted that education is essential in combating corruption. He plans to equip all stakeholders with the knowledge required to recognise and prevent malpractice: “I want to ensure that all Bangladeshi male and female cricketers are safe. I have spoken with the President, CEO and Board Members, and they have extended their full support. We will restructure the Integrity Unit. Our goal is to educate everyone on anti-corruption measures so they clearly understand what to do. They must be made aware, ensuring that corrupt individuals cannot take advantage.”
