Rashed Khan, General Secretary of the Gono Adhikar Parishad, has demanded the resignation of the Interim Government’s Home Adviser, Lieutenant General (Retd) Mohammad Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.
While visiting Gono Adhikar Parishad president and former DUCSU Vice President Nurul Haq, who is currently receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Rashed Khan said:
“You have no right to remain in your position. We demand your resignation. If you have any shame, you should apologise and step down.”
He continued:
“Whether or not you are responsible, we believe that as Home Adviser, you are completely incapable of controlling the law and order situation in Bangladesh. Therefore, after yesterday’s incident, you can no longer hold this position.”
Rashed Khan also commented on the viral video of the man in the red shirt who was seen attacking Nurul Haq with a baton. He said:
“Certain criminals in the army attacked Nurul Haq. The person in the red shirt attacked student rights leader Samrat.”
He added:
“The attack on us involved the army, and the police had a role as well. Under whose orders did the army go onto the field and spill our blood? The army chief must investigate and take action against those responsible.”
On the evening of the previous day, a clash occurred between the leaders and activists of the Jatiya Party (JP) and Gono Adhikar Parishad in Kakrail, Dhaka.
The clash erupted when a procession of Gono Adhikar Parishad passed by the Jatiya Party’s office.
Subsequently, several leaders and activists of Gono Adhikar Parishad, including president Nurul Haq, were injured in a baton charge by law enforcement agencies.
Gono Adhikar Parishad has claimed that:
“While the procession was passing by, JP leaders and activists launched an attack on us.”
On the other hand, JP has claimed:
“The leaders and activists of Gono Adhikar Parishad were the first to attack.”
At around 10:30 p.m. on Friday, Rashed Khan told the media:
“In protest against the attack by JP, at around 9:30 p.m., Nurul Haq, myself, and other leaders and activists were preparing for a press conference in front of the Gono Adhikar Parishad office. At that moment, police and army personnel attacked us. As a result, over a hundred leaders and activists, including president Nurul Haq, were injured. Nurul Haq was seriously injured and was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital along with six others.”
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) issued a statement on Friday, saying:
“To maintain public safety, the law enforcement agencies were compelled to use force.”
They also reported that five army personnel were injured in the incident.
A high-level medical board has been formed at Dhaka Medical College Hospital to treat Nurul Haq.
Brigadier General Mohammad Asaduzzaman, Director of the hospital, stated:
“Nurul Haq has sustained a head injury. His nose bone has been fractured, causing excessive bleeding, though it has now stopped, and he has regained consciousness. However, it is not possible to say whether Nurul Haq is out of danger before 48 hours.”
