Trump Arrives in Britain for Unprecedented Second State Visit

US President Donald Trump arrived in Britain on Tuesday for a historic second state visit, with the UK government rolling out the royal red carpet in an effort to charm the mercurial former president.

The 79-year-old Republican and his wife, Melania Trump, received a guard of honour upon stepping off Air Force One at Stansted Airport, near London.

“It’s going to be a very big thing,” Trump told reporters during the flight.

Trump, long fascinated by the British monarchy, is the first US president to be invited for two state visits, having previously been hosted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2019.

Trump’s itinerary is carefully staged for maximum spectacle and security:

Date Event Location Notes
Wednesday Banquet & carriage ride Windsor Castle Hosted by King Charles III
Thursday Meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer Prime Minister’s country residence Focus on trade negotiations and bilateral relations

Trump praised King Charles III, stating: “Charles, as you know, who’s now king, is my friend. He’s such an elegant gentleman and he represents the country so well.”

Security is tight, and Trump is expected to remain away from London crowds, where a major anti-Trump demonstration is planned on Wednesday.

Despite security measures, several dozen protesters gathered on Windsor High Street late Tuesday, waving anti-Trump signs, including Palestinian and Canadian flags.

Michelle, 32, a marketing executive, expressed her dismay: “I am beyond disappointed. I’m beyond frustrated. I’m beyond upset. Donald Trump as a person is fuelling a lot of the far-right protests that we’re already having here. It’s a humungous problem.”

The British state visit is unprecedented, featuring:

  • The first joint flypast by US and UK fighter jets at a state visit.
  • The largest guard of honour ever assembled for such an occasion.

The British government is clearly leveraging the soft power of the monarchy to keep Trump engaged, despite his unpredictable positions on issues such as tariffs, Ukraine, and Gaza.

Trump, however, indicated that Prime Minister Starmer still has work to do on a trade deal to avoid US-imposed global tariffs:

“They want to see if they can refine the trade deal a little bit,” Trump said.

Controversial topics—including Jeffrey Epstein, free speech debates, and Starmer’s domestic challenges—may produce awkward moments during the visit.

The visit comes at a sensitive time for both leaders:

  • Starmer faces criticism within the Labour Party over his leadership, including the appointment of Peter Mandelson as ambassador to Washington, despite Mandelson’s association with the late Epstein.
  • Trump himself is under scrutiny for his links to Epstein, with protesters projecting giant images of the two men onto Windsor Castle.

According to Downing Street, the visit aims to showcase the “unbreakable friendship” between the UK and the US, which will be further cemented with agreements worth €10 billion ($13.6 billion) in nuclear and tech projects.

Evie Aspinall, director of the British Foreign Policy Group, explained:”For Trump, the state visit is an opportunity to revel in the pomp and ceremony he loves. For Starmer, the visit is a chance to distract from domestic discontent and shift the limelight onto international issues where he has had greater success.”

The visit represents a high-stakes balancing act, combining spectacle, diplomacy, and political theatre as both leaders seek to capitalise on their brief time together.
