President Donald Trump announced on Friday that the US military had struck another drug trafficking vessel in international waters, resulting in the deaths of three people.
Unlike previous strikes in recent weeks, Trump did not specify whether the attack occurred off the coast of Venezuela, where the US Navy has deployed a small armada to combat drug smuggling. He only noted that the strike took place within the US Southern Command area of responsibility, which encompasses Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean.
Trump commented: “The strike killed 3 male narcoterrorists aboard the vessel, which was in international waters. No US Forces were harmed in this strike.”
The US has deployed a substantial force to the southern Caribbean, including:
| Asset | Deployment Location |
| 8 warships | Off the coast of Venezuela |
| 1 nuclear-powered submarine | Southern Caribbean |
| 10 fighter jets | Puerto Rico |
This deployment has stirred widespread concern in Latin America, prompting fears of a possible US attack on Venezuela.
Trump’s announcements form part of a broader effort to pressure Maduro, whose re-elections are disputed and whose legitimacy is not recognised by the US and much of the international community.
This campaign has intensified US-Venezuela tensions, raising concerns about the international legality of targeted killings at sea and the potential for escalation in the region.
| Detail | Information |
| Number of casualties | 3 killed |
| Vessel type | Alleged drug trafficking boat |
| Location | International waters (Southern Command area) |
| US Forces harmed | None |
| Video evidence | Yes, posted by Trump on Truth Social |
| US Military assets deployed | 8 warships, 1 submarine, 10 fighter jets |
| Controversy | Legality of killings, Maduro accuses US of regime change |
The strike underscores the US commitment to targeting drug trafficking routes, while simultaneously raising questions about the international law implications of such operations.
