A String of Foreign Artist Shows Cancelled in Dhaka

Published: 29 Nov 2025, 05:09 pm

The beginning of winter promised a vibrant season for music lovers in Dhaka, with various event organisers announcing approximately six major concerts featuring prominent artists from both Bangladesh and abroad. This line-up included popular bands and singers from India and Pakistan, creating significant anticipation among the public. However, due to unforeseen complications regarding security clearance, organisers have been unable to obtain the necessary permits from the administration, leading to a relentless wave of cancellations and postponements. Already, the postponement of three high-profile concerts has been officially declared. This leaves a cloud of uncertainty hanging over the remaining three scheduled events, causing deep concern among fans who have purchased tickets and eagerly awaited the performances.

The first major disappointment was the solo performance of Pakistani music sensation Ali Azmat. He was scheduled to perform in Dhaka on November 14 as part of the 'Legends Live in Dhaka' concert, which was also set to feature Bangladeshi rock legend, Nagar Baul James. In a clear display of commitment, Ali Azmat arrived in Dhaka three days ahead of the show. Yet, on the morning of the concert, the organisers announced its abrupt postponement, citing issues with securing the final necessary administrative and security permissions. This sudden announcement dashed the hopes of thousands of ticket holders and marked a bleak start to the concert season.

Following this, the concert of the popular Pakistani band Jal was also postponed. Organised by Stage Co., the Jal concert was scheduled for November 28 at the Swadesh Arena on 300 Feet Road in the capital. Titled 'Sound of Soul,' the event was also meant to showcase performances by two prominent Bangladeshi bands, Warfaze and Level Five. The news of Jal’s performance had generated substantial excitement among the younger demographic, but this enthusiasm was abruptly curtailed by the postponement, again attributed to the lack of administrative security approval.

The most recent cancellation involves Indian singer Anuv Jain. His concert was scheduled to take place on December 12 at the Courtside Madani Avenue on 100 Feet Road. However, on November 25, the organising company, Hypenation, formally announced the postponement. Across all three instances, the core issue remains the failure to secure the required permissions from the authorities, who are reportedly hesitant to sanction large public gatherings involving foreign artists due to ongoing security assessments and concerns about the current geopolitical climate in the region.

Meanwhile, two other major events featuring foreign talent are still on the calendar for the coming weeks: performances by Pakistani band Kavish and renowned singer Atif Aslam. On December 5, the 'Wave Fest: Feel the Winter' concert is set to host Kavish alongside Bangladeshi bands Shironamhin and Meghdol at the Courtside Madani Avenue. Prime Wave Communication is the organiser for this event.

Furthermore, Atif Aslam is slated to perform in a concert organised by Main Stage on December 13. He is also scheduled to perform at a charity concert titled 'Echoes of Revolution 2.0.' Recently, rumours began circulating on social media suggesting that Atif’s concert might also be cancelled, with reports indicating that organisers had not yet received final venue clearance. However, the organising entity, Main Stage, recently reassured the public, confirming that all legal and security protocols are being met and that the Atif Aslam concert will proceed as scheduled.

Despite the organisers' assurances, the overarching question remains: will these remaining high-profile international concerts actually take place as planned? The continuous string of cancellations casts a long shadow of doubt. Interestingly, some organisers are continuing their online ticket sales activities amidst this high uncertainty, leading to mixed reactions among patrons. While the international concert scene in Dhaka remains stalled, Bangladeshi bands and artists are consistently performing at various venues outside Dhaka, as well as at corporate shows and reunion events within the city, helping to fill the cultural void to some extent. The ongoing cancellations represent a significant financial loss for the local event management industry, underscoring the urgent need for a clear and consistent policy on concert permissions.
