Actor Zaher Alvi Sent to Jail After Remand

Bangladeshi television actor Niamat Ullah Bhuiyan, widely known as Zaher Alvi, has been sent to prison following the completion of his remand in a case involving the recovery of his wife’s hanging body from their residence in Mirpur, Dhaka.

According to court proceedings, investigators informed the tribunal that “significant information” had been obtained during Alvi’s custodial interrogation. The development was placed before a Metropolitan Magistrate in Dhaka on Tuesday, who subsequently ordered his transfer to jail custody after hearing the application submitted by the investigating officer.

Police sought continued detention of the actor, arguing that further custodial interrogation had yielded information relevant to the ongoing investigation. The investigating officer, Inspector Abdul Malek of the Detective Branch’s Mirpur zone, stated in the application that preliminary findings indicated possible links between the accused and the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities also maintained that the investigation was still in progress and that continued custody was necessary to verify leads and identify others potentially involved.

No bail petition was submitted on behalf of Alvi during the hearing, according to the complainant’s legal representative. With the completion of the remand period, the court directed that he be sent to prison custody pending further investigation.

The case has drawn considerable attention since its inception. Earlier, on 18 June, Alvi surrendered before a Metropolitan Magistrate court in Dhaka and applied for bail. The court, however, rejected the application and ordered that he be sent to jail at that stage. Subsequently, on 21 June, investigators sought remand for questioning, citing the need to examine his communications and social media activity in relation to the deceased.

The remand petition also referred to allegations that Alvi had, on multiple occasions, made derogatory and provocative remarks directed at the deceased on social media. It further mentioned claims regarding posts involving photographs with another woman while he was reportedly married, which investigators considered relevant to establishing the broader context of the case.

Separately, the actor’s mother, Nasrin Sultana, had earlier surrendered before the court in connection with the same case and was granted bail.

The case itself originates from 28 February, when Afra Ibanat Ikra was found unconscious at a residence in the Pallabi DOHS area of Dhaka. She was later taken to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors declared her dead. Following the incident, police visited the scene and collected evidence.

The next day, the victim’s father, Kabir Hayat Khan, filed a case with Pallabi Police Station, alleging that prolonged family disputes and mental harassment had driven his daughter to take her own life. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death remains ongoing.
