Grieving father identifies daughter’s body by her ring in Venezuela

Under a scorching sun at a makeshift morgue in the devastated port city of La Guaira, forensic experts clad in blue gowns and caps systematically examine rows of bodies bound in black plastic bags. Two powerful earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, struck Venezuela within seconds of each other. The coastal state, situated near the capital city of Caracas, has effectively been reduced to rubble. Entire residential neighbourhoods have been completely flattened.

According to official government figures, the death toll has already surpassed 1,700. With local hospital morgues overwhelmed and lacking adequate space, authorities have converted the port area into a temporary repository for the deceased. Coffins and body bags litter the grounds, and lime has been scattered over some remains to slow down decomposition. Near a white tent, approximately 100 empty urns sit in neat rows, waiting to preserve the ashes of victims after cremation.

Amongst those waiting anxiously in the heat is 25-year-old Wilcar Mollala, who remains on-site hoping to identify his relatives. He explained to the representative that his sister, her children, and his brother’s children are all inside the temporary facility. Out of an 11-member family, only Mollala and his brother survived. Both men were at their respective workplaces when the multi-storey residential buildings, shopping centres, and schools collapsed in an instant.

Amidst the unfolding tragedy, 41-year-old Anthony Marcano managed to locate his daughter. Marcano had actively participated in the gruelling excavation work to recover her body from the debris. The severe nature of the collapse meant her remains were unrecognisable, leaving only her clothing and a specific piece of jewellery as identifiers. “I came yesterday but could not find her after searching everywhere,” Marcano said. “I returned today, and thank God, I have found her. I gave her a ring as a gift, and that is how I recognised her.”

Official government records have not yet provided a definitive tally of how many citizens remain trapped beneath the flattened structures. However, the United Nations estimates that nearly 50,000 people are still missing, prompting the global organisation to dispatch 10,000 specialised body bags to assist local teams. Public frustration is mounting, with many survivors openly criticising the state’s disaster management response. In several affected zones, citizens are still using their bare hands to claw through concrete blockages to reach trapped loved ones.

Despite the widespread devastation, a profound wave of solidarity has swept across Venezuela. Numerous private funeral homes have stepped forward to offer free hearse transport and cremation services, ensuring that victims receive a dignified farewell. Trying to process his own grief, Anthony Marcano urged other families to maintain hope under the circumstances, advising them to pray for the strength to find their loved ones and grant them a proper, respectful burial.
