Day Labourer Killed Between Trains in Uttara

A 55-year-old day labourer, Shahnaz Begum, has died after being trapped between two moving trains while attempting to cross a railway line in Uttara, a busy residential and commercial area in the northern part of Dhaka.

The incident took place on Monday night (29 June) when Shahnaz Begum was returning home after finishing construction-related work in the Ajampur area. According to family members, she had been engaged in manual labour during the day and was on her way back after completing a concreting job.

While crossing the railway line in Uttara, she reportedly became caught between two trains passing in opposite directions. The sudden and dangerous movement left her critically injured at the scene.

She was initially rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. As her condition remained critical, she was later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Despite medical intervention, she succumbed to her injuries at around 12:30am.

Police confirmed the death and stated that the body was kept in the hospital morgue for post-mortem examination. Officials from the railway police are handling the necessary legal procedures related to the incident.

Shahnoz Begum’s son, Sujan, said he was informed of the accident shortly after it occurred and immediately went to the hospital. He said he later found his mother’s body there. He added that his mother worked as a day labourer and had been returning home after completing construction work in Ajampur when the accident happened.

He further described how she had attempted to cross the railway line at a time when trains were passing in both directions, leaving her trapped in between.

Shahnoz Begum was the wife of the late Milon Mia from Madarganj upazila in Jamalpur district. At the time of the incident, she had been living in the Tongi Railway Gate area.

Accidents involving pedestrians at informal railway crossings remain a recurring safety concern in several parts of Dhaka and its surrounding industrial zones. In densely populated areas like Uttara, where railway lines often intersect with daily pedestrian movement, residents frequently rely on unofficial crossing points, increasing the risk of fatal incidents, particularly during peak train movement hours.

Authorities are expected to review the circumstances surrounding the incident as part of ongoing procedures.
