Afghanistan Pay Heavy Price for Unused Decision Reviews

Afghanistan Pay Heavy Price for Unused Decision Reviews

The Afghanistan national cricket team are facing a monumental task in the ongoing, solitary Test match against India at New Chandigarh, heavily penalised by their failure to utilise the Decision Review System (DRS). Over the course of the opening two days, the visiting side neglected to review three critical umpiring decisions, each of which subsequently proved to be a significant error upon television replay. The Indian batsman capitalised fully on these missed opportunities to post a colossal first-innings total, leaving the Afghan team struggling comprehensively in response.

Repeated Umpiring Misjudgements and Lack of Reviews

India resumed their first innings on the second day of the Test match at a commanding position of 368 runs for the loss of three wickets after 85 overs. The initial missed opportunity for Afghanistan arrived during the 89th over of the host nation’s innings.

The Afghan medium-pacer, Azmatullah Omarzai, delivered the fourth ball of the over and launched a strong appeal for leg before wicket (LBW) against the well-set Indian opening batsman, Shubman Gill. The on-field umpire turned down the appeal, and the Afghanistan captain, Hashmatullah Shahidi, chose not to initiate a formal television review.

The very next delivery compounded the visitors’ frustration. Following a single run taken as a leg-bye by Gill, Omarzai induced an edge from the newly arrived batsman, Rishabh Pant, which travelled cleanly through to the wicketkeeper, Afsar Zazai. Omarzai appealed for a catch behind the stumps, but he received minimal assurance from Zazai. Lacking support from his wicketkeeper, Shahidi once again refrained from signaling for a DRS review.

Subsequent television replays broadcast to the public confirmed the gravity of both errors. The replay for the first delivery indicated that Gill would have been dismissed, whilst the replay for the subsequent ball clearly demonstrated that the cricket ball had brushed the edge of Pant’s bat before being collected by Zazai.

These successive defensive lapses provoked substantial discussion among cricket analysts and spectators. A significant cross-section of commentators expressed the view that Rahmanullah Gurbaz ought to have been deployed behind the stumps as the wicketkeeper. Gurbaz is widely regarded as a highly experienced wicketkeeper-batsman, having represented his country regularly in international fixtures and featured extensively in various foreign domestic T20 franchise leagues.

India Capitalise to Declare on a Colossal Total

The reprieves granted to the Indian batsmen proved immensely costly for the touring side. At the exact moment of their respective let-offs, Shubman Gill was batting on 107 runs, whilst Rishabh Pant had accumulated 54 runs.

The Indian team proceeded to bat comprehensively, eventually declaring their first innings at a massive total of 564 runs for the loss of eight wickets after 127 overs. Gill went on to anchor the innings, emerging as the top scorer with a refined 126 runs.

Furthermore, KL Rahul achieved a century, scoring exactly 100 runs. His innings was also preserved earlier by an identical error from the Afghanistan team, who chose not to review an initial caught-behind appeal that television replays later validated. Meanwhile, Pant extended his reprieve from 54 runs to a final individual score of 81 runs before being dismissed.

Amidst the formidable batting display by the hosts, the Afghan pace bowler, Mohammad Saleem, emerged as the standout performer for the bowling side. Saleem delivered a prolonged and resilient spell of bowling to claim six wickets for 140 runs.

Afghanistan Struggle Heading Into Day Three

Faced with a daunting first-innings deficit, the Afghanistan national team commenced their response but suffered immediate and regular setbacks against the Indian bowling attack. By the conclusion of the second day’s play, the visitors had slumped to 113 runs for the loss of five wickets in 39.5 overs.

The top-order batsman, Rahmat Shah, offered the primary resistance for the touring team and remained unbeaten at the crease on 43 runs when stumps were drawn. Afghanistan currently trail the host nation by 451 runs with only five first-innings wickets remaining intact ahead of the third day of play.
