The man arrested in connection with the assassination of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk was reportedly romantically involved with a transgender roommate and held “leftist ideology,” Utah Governor Spencer Cox said on Sunday. The details, he acknowledged, are likely to intensify an already contentious national debate over the killing.
When asked about the suspect, Tyler Robinson, and his relationship with a transgender individual, Cox confirmed the reports during an interview on CNN’s State of the Union: “Yes, I can confirm that. The roommate was a romantic partner, a male transitioning to a female. This partner has been incredibly cooperative, had no idea that this was happening, and is working with investigators right now.”
Cox stressed that it is not yet clear whether the partner’s transition played a role in Robinson’s alleged motive for targeting Kirk, a close ally of former US President Donald Trump.
“Again, all of these things — we’re trying to figure out,” he said.
Robinson, 22, is expected to be formally charged on Tuesday.
Cox further indicated to NBC’s Meet the Press that investigators believe Robinson embraced leftist beliefs: “There clearly was a leftist ideology with this — with this assassin. This information comes from people around him, including family and friends.”
Several US media outlets reported Robinson’s relationship with a transgender individual on Saturday, sparking outrage among far-right activists, for whom gender identity issues have become a central focus.
Notable reactions included:
Cox, meanwhile, reiterated a call for political civility, condemning social media companies by comparing their addictive algorithms to the deadly drug fentanyl.
Kirk was shot on Wednesday during a speaking engagement at a Utah university campus. He founded the conservative youth political group Turning Point USA and was a prominent critic of the transgender rights movement.
Kirk frequently invoked his Christian faith and criticised what he and others call gender ideology, making him a polarising figure.
As debate continues over Kirk’s murder, Pete Buttigieg, a member of former President Joe Biden’s cabinet, emphasised there is “not a consistent pattern of left versus right among the shooters” in recent high-profile attacks. He noted the June killing of Minnesota Democratic lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her husband.
“We have to reject anyone who would try to exploit political violence. The response to this cannot be for the government to crack down on individuals or groups because they challenge the government politically,” Buttigieg told NBC.
Turning Point USA announced a memorial service for Kirk to be held in a football stadium near Phoenix, Arizona, on September 21. Former President Trump confirmed he will attend.
