Bollywood singer, composer and music director Amaal Mallik has announced a temporary break from creating new music for films, saying he needs to prioritise his physical and mental wellbeing. According to his announcement, he does not plan to take on new film-song projects until next year.
The 36-year-old musician shared the decision in a social media post on 27 August. In his message, Mallik said he currently needs to focus on his mind, body and peace of mind before returning to work. He made it clear that the break is intended to give him time to recover fully and regain the balance he needs before resuming his musical career.
Mallik’s decision does not amount to a permanent departure from the film industry. Rather, he has indicated that he intends to return to music after taking time away from the demands of new projects. His announcement suggests that his immediate priority is recovery rather than maintaining his usual professional schedule.
Some of Mallik’s earlier projects may still reach audiences during his break. The musician said a number of previously recorded songs, including some that have not yet been released, could be made available in the near future. However, their release dates remain uncertain.
One reason for the uncertainty is the status of the films associated with some of these songs. Mallik indicated that several of the projects were made on relatively modest budgets and may not secure wide theatrical releases. As a result, it is difficult to predict when some of the films, and consequently their songs, will become available to audiences.
For now, Mallik has asked his fans and well-wishers to give him some time and avoid repeatedly seeking updates about his next project. He has said that he will announce his future plans himself once he feels ready to return.
The musician also suggested that his recent professional journey had increasingly taken him towards the world of cinema, while his current intention is to reconnect with music itself. Taking a break, he indicated, will allow him to step away from the pressures of ongoing film commitments and eventually approach his work with renewed energy.
Mallik has also shared a photograph from a hospital on social media, showing himself on a hospital bed. The image has offered some indication of his recent physical circumstances, although he has not disclosed details of any specific illness or described his condition as serious. His comments have instead focused on the broader need to look after both his physical health and mental wellbeing.
Known for working across several areas of the Indian music industry, Mallik has established himself as a singer, composer and music director. His work for Hindi films has been an important part of his career, while his own singing and compositions have also helped him develop a distinct identity among listeners.
His temporary absence from new film projects is therefore likely to be noticed by audiences familiar with his work. Nevertheless, Mallik has not suggested that he is stepping away from music altogether. His stated intention is to return once he has had sufficient time to recover.
He expects to resume work on new film music next year, although he has not announced a specific return date or revealed details of the projects he may undertake. For the moment, his focus remains on taking care of himself and allowing enough time for a proper recovery before making his next professional move.
