Volunteering Leader Jailed and Expelled Over Substance Abuse

A mobile court operating in Rupganj Upazila of Narayanganj has sentenced Ali Ahmed, the member secretary of the local Sechchasebak Dal, to 15 days of rigorous imprisonment following his conviction for substance abuse. In a swift response to the legal action, the central leadership of the political organisation permanently expelled him from all party positions, citing serious breaches of organisational discipline and conduct.

The summary court session took place on Wednesday afternoon, presided over by Rupganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Executive Magistrate SM Abdullah Bin Shafiq. Following the legal proceedings, the magistrate ordered the immediate committal of the convict. Law enforcement authorities subsequently transferred Ahmed to the Narayanganj District Jail later the same afternoon to serve his custodial sentence.

The conviction stems from an operation conducted on Tuesday evening, during which officers from the Rupganj Police Station detained Ahmed under suspicion of consuming illegal narcotics. Following his apprehension, police authorities subjected him to a mandatory medical screening and drug test. The laboratory results confirmed the presence of banned substances in his system, providing the necessary evidence for his immediate prosecution before the mobile court.

As news of the judicial sentence broke, the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Sechchasebak Dal—the volunteer wing of the party—moved rapidly to sever ties with the local official. Central Office Secretary Abdullah Al Mamun formally issued an official press statement detailing the expulsion. According to the release, the leadership took decisive action due to Ahmed’s involvement in activities directly violating the party’s code of conduct and moral standards.

Local leadership quickly confirmed receipt of the directive. Rafiqul Islam Rafiq, the convenor of the Rupganj Upazila Sechchasebak Dal, confirmed that the unit had officially received the signed expulsion document from the central headquarters. He added that the party directive explicitly instructs all local leaders, activists, and supporters to immediately terminate all organisational contact and official association with the former member secretary.

Reinforcing the position of the regional executive, Mahabubur Rahman, convenor of the Narayanganj District Sechchasebak Dal, stated that the organisation maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy regarding illegal activities and breaches of discipline. He noted that the central leadership, led by Sechchasebak Dal President SM Jilani and General Secretary Rajib Ahsan, jointly approved the decision to strip Ahmed of all primary membership privileges, ensuring the organisation’s integrity remains uncompromised.
