Lionel Messi has finally graced Indian shores, bringing an end to the long wait of fervent fans across the country. The G.O.A.T. India Tour has been dominating headlines ever since the Argentine football legend arrived, with every appearance scrutinised and celebrated in equal measure.
While opinions about the organisation of the tour remain mixed, one encounter in particular has captured the public imagination: Messi’s meeting with Anant Ambani, the youngest scion of India’s richest family, which saw the footballer receive a gift of extraordinary luxury.
Reports confirm that Messi was presented with a rare Richard Mille timepiece, reportedly worth USD 1.2 million (approximately Rs. 10.91 crore). The watch, a Richard Mille RM 003-V2 GMT Tourbillon ‘Asia Edition’, is a limited-edition masterpiece with only 12 units in existence worldwide. Messi arrived at the Vantara wildlife rescue, rehabilitation, and conservation centre—founded by Anant Ambani—without a watch, only to later be spotted sporting this ultra-rare creation.
| Gift | Recipient | Brand & Model | Edition | Price (USD) | Price (INR) |
| Watch | Lionel Messi | Richard Mille RM 003-V2 GMT Tourbillon ‘Asia Edition’ | Limited to 12 | 1.2 million | 10.91 crore |
| Watch | Anant Ambani | Richard Mille RM 056 Sapphire Tourbillon | Unique | 5 million | 45.59 crore |
Adding to the spectacle, Anant Ambani himself was seen wearing the Richard Mille RM 056 Sapphire Tourbillon, a truly unique creation valued at USD 5 million, demonstrating the Ambani family’s enduring penchant for haute horology.
Messi’s visit to Vantara was far more than a meeting of sporting and business titans; it was a deeply cultural and humanitarian experience. In keeping with the centre’s Sanatana Dharma traditions, Messi participated in traditional Hindu rituals, including Maha Aarti and Puja ceremonies dedicated to Ambe Mata, Ganesh, Hanuman, and Shiva. Inter Miami teammates Luis Suárez and Rodrigo De Paul accompanied him throughout.
Messi also toured Vantara’s conservation ecosystem, engaging with rescued wildlife ranging from lions and leopards to elephants and reptiles. One particularly poignant moment saw him play football with Maniklal, a rescued elephant calf, underscoring the universal language of compassion and play.
In a symbolic gesture, Anant and Radhika Ambani named a lion cub ‘Lionel’ in the footballer’s honour, representing hope and continuity. Reflecting on his experience, Messi lauded the centre’s efforts, describing the rescue, rehabilitation, and care of its animals as “truly beautiful,” leaving an indelible mark on both him and those present.
Messi’s Indian visit, thus, was a perfect blend of luxury, cultural immersion, and humanitarian engagement—an encounter that will be remembered far beyond the football pitch.
