Phil Foden’s inclusion in England’s World Cup squad is now uncertain after underwhelming displays in March’s international friendlies. Though these matches against Uruguay and Japan were non-competitive, they offered manager Thomas Tuchel a critical opportunity to evaluate players before finalising his squad.

England failed to register a win in either fixture, drawing 2–2 with Uruguay and suffering a 0–1 home defeat to Japan. Foden, who was expected to drive England’s attacking play and support captain Harry Kane, struggled to influence either game, prompting questions over his readiness for the tournament.

The 25-year-old Manchester City midfielder has faced challenges this season due to limited game time at club level, a factor that has contributed to inconsistent form on the international stage. Tuchel remarked on Foden’s performance:

“He put in maximum effort. In camp and training, he was excellent, but on the pitch he struggled. The energy and decisive influence we expected were absent, which was disappointing for us all.”

Foden’s previous contributions to England remain significant. He played a key role in the national team’s run to the European Championship final and earned multiple individual awards for his skill and vision. However, Tuchel was careful not to guarantee him a World Cup place, noting:

“We can celebrate his past achievements, but the question now is whether he can deliver consistently. There is no certainty he will return to his peak form in time.”

Tuchel has not shied away from making difficult selection decisions since taking charge of the national team, as demonstrated by the omission of high-profile defender Trent Alexander-Arnold in the recent squad.

The March friendlies offered insight into England’s squad dynamics and tactical readiness. Tuchel emphasised that, while results provide useful information, they do not define the team entirely:

“Every session, training, and match is an opportunity to learn. How quickly players understand tactics and execute them on the field is key. March offered lessons, but it does not define us completely.”

Tuchel remains optimistic that as the domestic season concludes, players—including Foden—can regain form and enter the national team’s pre-World Cup camp fully prepared.
