Spanish football sensation Lamine Yamal has issued a strong public condemnation following the emergence of Islamophobic chanting during an international friendly match between Spain and Egypt, held at the RCDE Stadium. The 18-year-old forward, widely regarded as one of the brightest talents in world football, used social media to denounce the behaviour of a section of supporters, describing it as “intolerant” and rooted in “ignorance”.
The match, which featured Spain national football team and Egypt national football team, ended in a goalless draw on Tuesday (31 March). However, attention quickly shifted away from the pitch after disturbing scenes were reported from the stands. According to multiple accounts, a group of spectators repeatedly chanted Islamophobic slogans throughout the first half, including provocations directed at Muslim identity and religious practice.
Witnesses also reported that during Egypt’s national anthem, sections of the crowd engaged in loud whistling and jeering. Further tension arose when certain players performed gestures of Muslim faith during the match, prompting mocking reactions from parts of the stadium. Despite a warning message displayed on the stadium’s big screens during half-time, the disruptive chanting did not fully cease.
In a widely shared Instagram statement, Yamal affirmed his religious identity, writing: “I am Muslim, Alhamdulillah.” He added that chants such as “if you don’t jump, you are Muslim” were heard from the stands. While acknowledging that the chants may have been directed at opposing supporters rather than individuals, he stressed that such expressions remain deeply disrespectful.
Yamal continued by emphasising that football should remain a space of unity and enjoyment rather than a platform for religious ridicule or division. He described those responsible as acting out of ignorance and reaffirmed that discrimination in any form has no place in sport.
Born to Moroccan and Equatorial Guinean heritage, Yamal has already established himself as a key figure in Spanish football, playing a decisive role in Spain’s UEFA Euro 2024 success. His prominence has made his response particularly influential, with many observers praising his calm but firm stance against discrimination.
Catalan Sports Minister Berni Álvarez strongly condemned the incident, calling it a serious breach of sporting values and insisting that such behaviour undermines the spirit of football. Meanwhile, local police authorities, the Mossos d'Esquadra, have launched an investigation into the matter, reviewing available footage to identify those responsible.
Football’s governing body, FIFA, is also expected to assess official match reports and security documentation, with disciplinary action possible if individuals or groups are identified. The home club, RCD Espanyol, issued a statement condemning the behaviour while cautioning against generalising the actions of a minority to the entire fanbase.
