A tragic incident in Faridpur has claimed the life of a 60-year-old housewife, Fatema Begum, who mistakenly consumed a herbicide believing it to be her prescribed medication. The incident underscores the dangers of unsafe storage of toxic substances in households, particularly where vulnerable individuals are present.
Fatema Begum, a resident of Chardurgapur village in the Hajidangi area under Ishangopalpur ইউনিয়ন of Sadar upazila, fell critically ill after ingesting the chemical on Wednesday (1 April) at around 10:00 a.m. According to family members, she had been suffering from complications related to a previous stroke, which may have contributed to confusion and impaired judgement.
Unaware of the fatal mistake, she reportedly drank the herbicide kept inside her home, assuming it to be medicine. When relatives realised what had happened, they rushed her to Faridpur Medical College Hospital. Upon arrival, attending physicians admitted her to the medicine ward and began emergency treatment. Despite medical efforts, her condition deteriorated rapidly due to severe poisoning, and she passed away the following morning, Thursday (2 April), at approximately 9:30 a.m.
Hospital sources indicated that the toxic effects of herbicides can be particularly severe when ingested, often leading to multi-organ failure depending on the type and quantity consumed. In rural settings, such chemicals are frequently stored in repurposed containers, increasing the risk of accidental ingestion.
Following the incident, police from Kotwali থানায় visited the hospital and completed the inquest report. Officer-in-Charge Md Shahidul Islam confirmed that legal procedures were underway, although initial findings suggest the death was accidental.
Fatema Begum’s husband, Md Alef Sheikh, stated that his wife had been undergoing treatment for a long time due to stroke-related complications. He believes that her medical condition led to the confusion that caused the fatal error.
Public health experts often warn that pesticides and herbicides should be stored in clearly labelled containers and kept out of reach, particularly in households with elderly or medically vulnerable individuals. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potentially deadly consequences of negligence in handling hazardous substances.
