Students at Jagannath University have resorted to wearing helmets during classes and examinations following a recent ceiling collapse in the mathematics department, raising serious concerns about campus safety. The incident has highlighted longstanding structural vulnerabilities in several university buildings.

The incident occurred on the morning of 1 April 2026 in a seminar room within the mathematics department. While a class was in session, a portion of the ceiling plaster unexpectedly collapsed, injuring two students: Tanvir Niyaz Fahim and Mahfuzur Rahman Mitul, both enrolled in the 2024–25 academic year. Emergency assistance was provided immediately, and the injured students were treated for minor injuries.

The collapse has sparked widespread anxiety among students, many of whom now feel unsafe attending lectures or sitting for examinations in older campus buildings. Several students reported that they had observed plaster falling from ceilings in the past and voiced concerns about the deteriorating conditions, particularly in academic buildings that have not undergone recent maintenance.

According to university sources, similar incidents have occurred previously. One mathematics department lecturer was present when part of a classroom ceiling collapsed, though no serious injuries were reported at that time. The university administration has yet to announce a concrete plan for comprehensive repairs or inspections, further fuelling student apprehension.

Mahfuzur Rahman Mitul2024–25Minor back injuriesTreated & discharged

Students have expressed frustration over the lack of proactive measures, highlighting that multiple academic buildings are in poor condition and pose safety risks. Many are now taking precautionary measures, including wearing helmets during lectures and examinations, to protect themselves from potential hazards.

University authorities have stated that inspections will be carried out, but no specific timeline has been released. In the meantime, students continue to advocate for urgent structural assessments and repairs to prevent further accidents.
